Job Goal: Under general supervision, performs the full range of journeyman level carpenter duties in the construction, finishing and repair of buildings, furniture and other wood or metal products in order to support the education mission of the District and to enhance the education environment; and, provides direction and guidance to others to ensure the efficient operation of the carpenter department. Essential Functions Perform all listed functions and assist the Director of Physical Properties in maintaining a cohesive and efficient operation of the maintenance department through the successful completion of additional tasks, including but not limited to: Assist the Director with project specifications; provide professional input and guidance; gather cost estimates for repairs or equipment replacement; prepare quote sheets for approval; coordinate with other crafts and outside vendors when necessary; plan and coordinate daily work within this specific trade or craft to complete work order requests in a timely manner; ensure that all completed work order information is entered appropriately; provide first‑level leadership guidance of others within this trade or craft; conduct first‑level performance evaluations for others for approval by the Director; inform the Director of potential personnel issues and/or violations of adopted Personnel Policies; participate in appropriate corrective action; and complete all other actions directed by the Director to ensure district goals and policies are met in a safe and timely manner. Perform rough and finished carpentry work in the repair and construction of buildings, sheds, roofs, room partitions and other items. Estimate, determine needs, and arrange for supplies and equipment to perform or schedule work assignments. Read and interpret blueprints and/or specifications to determine procedures for required construction and/or remodel projects; repair partitions, doors, locks, windows, blinds, floors, furniture, screens, shades, upholstery, stage curtains, auditorium seating and building framework; install finished hardware such as window or door locks, hinges, screens, or other related work; install floor boards and floor coverings such as linoleum tile, VCT, carpet tiles or other sheet goods; make minor roof repairs in association with District’s roofer or as needed; hang various items safely; construct minor buildings or small additions; assist other departments to ensure all carpentry‑related work is performed according to safety standards; operate and perform maintenance on tools and equipment common to the trade; keep accurate records of time and materials; perform minor supervisory jobs as needed; perform other duties at a level of skill the same as or lower than required by normal assignments; and serve as a minor supervisory role when designated a “Leader” on specific projects. Be able to perform work that involves the possible disturbance of asbestos‑containing materials (ACMs) and be medically and physically able to wear a respirator. Qualifications High school graduation and completion of trade/apprenticeship and/or vocational school program including courses in mathematics, carpentry and woodworking. Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in the building trades as a journeyman level carpenter or equivalent experience in a commercial, educational or facilities operations setting, with two (2) years in a leadership role. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade and applicable local, state and federal health and safety code requirements. Cabinet making experience highly preferred. Demonstrated ability to manage time and materials, work cooperatively with others, and be a self‑starter and self‑motivated to complete assigned job tasks. Spatial ability to understand forms and relationships. Knowledgeable in construction and building repair terminology. Numerical ability required to make proper calculations. Ability to read and understand blueprints, specifications and diagrams; construct cabinetry and similar works from simple diagrams and/or blueprints/shop drawings. Knowledge of trade‑related machines and tools, including designs, uses, repair, maintenance and safe operating practices. Strong organizational ability. Knowledge of public schools or university operations preferred. Knowledge of, and ability to support, relevant policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective educational operations for the protection of students, staff, coworkers and district property. Communication / Organization Maintain positive communication with maintenance shop personnel, trade foremen, shop administration and school personnel. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with district administration and community. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including listening and responding to instruction. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Reasoning Ability Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables where only limited standardization exists. Understand written procedures, write routine documents and speak clearly; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Identify complex problems, review related information to develop, evaluate and recommend options and implement solutions. Perform basic math calculations using fractions, percents and/or ratios. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Work is medium to heavy. Maintenance personnel routinely handle loads weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally handle loads weighing up to 100 pounds or more. Tasks involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and crouching to make repairs and install equipment. The position requires near‑visual acuity for reading blueprints and specifications, color and depth perception and field of vision for machinery and tools. Successful candidate must be able to work inside or outside in bad weather. The work environment may be subject to loud noise from machinery and equipment. Employee may be required to work long and/or non‑typical hours. Driver’s License Employee shall have a valid driver’s license at the time of employment with the Kansas City Kansas USD #500 School District. If at any time during employment the employee should lose their driver’s license or it be suspended for any reason, the employee shall immediately notify the Director of Physical Properties.
