Controller Position at Cottage Hospital

Cottage Hospital is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Controller to lead the financial operations of our Critical Access Hospital. The Controller oversees all financial activities within the organization and provides leadership to accounts payable, payroll, and general accounting functions. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, supports audit and regulatory requirements, and partners with hospital leadership to monitor financial performance and budget variances. The Controller plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, supporting compliance, and ensuring financial transparency across departments.

Key responsibilities include supervising accounts payable, payroll, and general accounting staff; leading monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes; preparing and reviewing financial statements and reporting packages; supporting year-end audits and coordinating with external auditors; conducting financial variance analysis and partnering with department leaders; assisting in preparation of annual operating and capital budgets; overseeing preparation of Medicare Cost Reports, Disproportionate Share (DSH) audits, and Form 990 filings; monitoring financial controls and ensuring regulatory compliance; maintaining knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party reimbursement structures; and supporting financial forecasting and performance analysis.

Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field required. Experience in hospital financial management is required, along with strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial reporting, experience working with external auditors, experience supporting regulatory reporting requirements, prior supervisory or team leadership experience strongly preferred, and Critical Access Hospital experience a plus.
