Registered Nurse Critical Care Unit PRN

Job Summary ICU is an 11‑bed adult medical intensive care unit treating critically ill patients with medical problems related to renal disease, cardiac disease, respiratory disease and other medical issues including post‑surgical and dialysis patients. The unit is the receiving area for patients following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The role requires BLS upon hire and ACLS within 3 months of hire. The worker is an employee (PRN) who works 12 hours per week, typically in a rotating shift pattern. The unit is a regular exposure to infectious, contagious and blood‑borne diseases, accidents, injuries, illnesses and irregular hours. The RN must handle emergency or crisis situations and provide high‑quality, patient‑centered care. Essential Functions Documents initial nursing histories, assesses patients’ conditions per policy, and develops individual care plans considering physical, psycho‑social, environmental, cultural and spiritual needs. Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and direct patient care per established policies and procedures. Evaluates patient outcomes, consults with specialists as needed and revises care processes to optimize care. Coordinates discharge planning and monitors and records patients’ conditions. Maintains patient confidentiality. Uses an interdisciplinary approach to formulate teaching plans based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of teaching, including family education. Coordinates ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services. Communicates patients’ conditions during hand‑offs. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned by the director of nursing, charge nurse, or medical staff. Performs charge duties as requested after 6 months nursing experience and appropriate training. Rounds on patients per policy to improve clinical outcomes. Orient or mentor new staff members. Listens effectively to patients to facilitate care requirements. Provides first line customer service response. Follows the MUSC Standards of Behaviors. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification. Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July1,2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN within four years of hire or reclassification. Refer to policy A141 for details. Current ACLS certification required within 3 months for the first month of employment. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods. Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as vital sign acquisition, injections and physical exams. Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed. Visual acuity and color perception to accurately read charts, documents and monitors. Auditory ability to communicate effectively and detect alarms. Stamina and resilience to manage the physical and emotional demands of patient care. Mobility to navigate clinical environments and move between patient rooms and offices.
