School Adjustment Counselor - Whitcomb Middle School Marlborough Public Schools, Whitcomb Middle School, Marlborough, Massachusetts. Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026 Job Description Title of Position: School Adjustment Counselor - Whitcomb Middle School Reports to: Building Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Student Services and Equity School Year: 2026-27 Salary: In accordance with the MEA Salary Scale according to education and experience Summary: School adjustment counselors provide direct service through individual and small group meetings as well as indirect support through collaboration and consultation with colleagues across disciplines, including administrators, teachers and student support providers. They support students and families on their caseload in meeting social/emotional needs and play an integral role with student support colleagues to connect students and families to a variety of support structures in and out of school, including referrals to therapists, psychiatrists and other critical services. Responsibilities Provide direct service to students with mental health, behavioral, or social needs identified through a referral process. Engage students in academic, behavioral, and social/emotional learning experiences using educational and/or clinical practices. Consult with teachers and administration about mental health, behavioral management, and social functioning; assist teachers with classroom social/emotional support. Share conclusions about student progress with colleagues and seek feedback to support improved learning and development. Promote student education on emotional regulation, wellness strategies, conflict resolution, and social development. Accommodate differences in learning styles, needs, interests, and levels of readiness, including students with disabilities and English learners. Provide risk reduction preventative and prosocial skill based support. Advocate for and support parental involvement in the child’s education process. Use assessment data to provide feedback and engage students and families in constructive conversations focused on growth. Make appropriate referrals to community agencies for student and family needs. Communicate with parents to create and share strategies for supporting learning at school and home. Refer students with significant safety risks to Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES). Lead the Child Abuse Review Team (CART). File (51A) reports. Develop or contribute to timely, well-structured plans with measurable outcomes addressing individual student needs. Collaborate with colleagues on planning appropriate interventions at the classroom or school level. Provide advice and expertise to general education teachers and colleagues for effective academic, behavioral, and social/emotional learning experiences. Serve on the Equity Team, following district-wide Civil Rights Policy guidelines. Attend district-wide and school-based meetings, training, and professional development. Assist in school-wide community service learning projects. Act as liaison to DCF, Human Services & Mental Health providers; coordinate with McKinney Vento. Participate in monthly students-at-risk meetings; attend IST, IEP, and 504 meetings as appropriate. Provide crisis intervention services for school-based and district-wide situations. Design and administer assessments to measure student learning, growth, and development. Exercise sound judgment reflecting integrity, honesty, fairness, and trustworthiness while protecting confidentiality. Perform additional duties as assigned by the building principal. Qualifications Master’s Degree in counseling, psychology, or social work. DESE Massachusetts School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor license (preferred). Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese (preferred). Professional license such as LISCW or LMHC (preferred). Successful experience as a counselor, school adjustment counselor, or clinical social worker with direct therapeutic treatment. Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience collaborating with teachers, administrators, support staff, parents/community, and outside agencies. Flexible, timely, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity with Google Docs and Aspen is a plus. Alternative qualifications acceptable as determined by the Superintendent of Schools. Skills and Abilities Technology use – proficiency with school system databases, Microsoft and Google products, and web-based sites. Written and oral comprehension and expression; ability to communicate information clearly. Team player; respectful and collaborative behavior. Active listening; giving full attention and asking appropriate questions. Social perceptiveness; awareness of others’ reactions. Service orientation; proactive assistance to others.
