RN Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients during labor, delivery, and postpartum periods. This role involves patient assessment, planning and implementing individualized care plans, collaborating with healthcare teams, and educating patients and families. The nurse must demonstrate strong clinical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. Flexibility to float to Mother Baby, couplets, and other units as a safety companion is required. Responsibilities:

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and analyze data to determine nursing diagnoses.
• Develop and implement individualized care plans to achieve expected patient outcomes.
• Provide skilled nursing care during labor, delivery, and postpartum, including circulation duties.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care.
• Educate patients and families on health management and postpartum care.
• Maintain competence through ongoing education and adherence to professional standards.
• Practice modified primary nursing and promote a safe, healthy environment.
• Float to Mother Baby, couplets, and other units as needed for safety companion duties.
• Comply with all required training and certifications, including NRP and FHM recertifications.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in Montana.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider certification with biennial recertification.
• Electronic Fetal Monitoring Series Certificate or equivalent AWHONN-approved course (not required if Lactation RN).
• American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (not required if Lactation RN).
• Competence and willingness to practice modified primary nursing.
• Completion of two hours of initial cerebrovascular disease (stroke) education.
• Minimum of 2 years nursing experience preferred, with at least 1 year in labor and delivery preferred.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Certification in lactation consulting/counseling (CLC, IBCLC) if serving as Lactation RN.
• Experience working in labor and delivery or related maternal-child health units.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to circulate during labor and delivery procedures.
• Willingness to float to Mother Baby, couplets, and other units as a safety companion.
• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, radiation, chemicals, infectious diseases, and emotionally challenging situations.
• Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing, walking, bending, and fine finger movements.
• Must maintain on-time completion of all required education and certifications per regulatory and organizational standards.

Scheduling:

• Variable shifts with the ability to work beyond a standard 40-hour workweek, including weekends and after-hours.
• On-call availability may be required to respond to patient or organizational needs.
• Regular and sustained attendance is essential.
