Senior Counsel - IP, Product and Privacy [Remote]

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Counsel - IP, Product and Privacy based in United States.

This is a senior legal leadership opportunity at the intersection of intellectual property, AI, product development, and global privacy.
You’ll help protect and commercialize innovative technologies while embedding legal and regulatory considerations directly into the product lifecycle.
The role focuses on complex issues involving AI, public traffic video data, cloud platforms, hardware, and intelligent transportation technologies.
You’ll partner closely with engineering, product, technology, compliance, and executive teams to guide high-impact decisions.
You’ll own strategic IP portfolio management, privacy-by-design, data governance, and emerging technology risk.

Accountabilities

• Lead IP portfolio strategy: Partner with technology leadership to identify, protect, manage, and commercialize proprietary innovations, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.
• Manage IP prosecution: Coordinate patent and trademark drafting and prosecution with external legal counsel while ensuring the portfolio supports broader business objectives.
• Oversee intellectual property programs: Maintain the trade-secret register and oversee the Open Source Software policy and related compliance activities.
• Drive IP commercialization and enforcement: Evaluate the patent portfolio for commercial opportunities and develop appropriate strategies for addressing potential infringement.
• Advise on product and privacy matters: Embed legal, privacy, and regulatory considerations throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Guide privacy-by-design and data governance: Establish practical approaches to privacy and data governance across intelligent transportation hardware and cloud-based platforms.
• Advise on AI and video-data risks: Provide guidance on AI technologies, public traffic video capture, video obfuscation and blurring, data usage, and evolving regulatory requirements.
• Maintain governance alignment: Support adherence to AI governance, open-source software, regulatory, enterprise risk management, and other relevant operational frameworks.
• Educate internal teams: Develop and deliver targeted training for technology teams on IP protection, privacy compliance, regulatory developments, and emerging legal risks.
• Manage external counsel: Direct external legal partners effectively, balancing quality, business needs, legal outcomes, and budget considerations.
• Partner cross-functionally: Build trusted relationships across engineering, product, technology, compliance, and executive leadership to enable informed and timely decisions.

Requirements

• Senior legal experience: 10+ years of legal experience focused on intellectual property, technology, privacy, product, AI, or related areas, ideally gained in a top-tier law firm or high-growth technology environment.
• Technology-sector expertise: Experience advising businesses operating across software, hardware, AI, data, or Intelligent Transportation Systems is strongly preferred.
• IP portfolio management: Deep knowledge of patent capture and prosecution, trademark matters, trade-secret management, and IP commercialization or enforcement.
• Global privacy expertise: Strong understanding of privacy and data protection frameworks including  PIPEDA, CCPA, GDPR , and relevant municipal or public-sector privacy regulations.
• AI and emerging technology knowledge: Ability to assess legal and regulatory considerations associated with AI, video data, data governance, and other emerging technologies.
• Product counseling: Experience embedding legal, privacy, and compliance considerations into technology and product development processes.
• External counsel management: Demonstrated ability to manage outside counsel strategically and efficiently while optimizing legal spend and outcomes.
• Cross-functional influence: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build credibility and influence engineering, product, technology, and executive stakeholders.
• Strategic judgment: A proactive, decisive, and commercially minded approach to complex legal and business problems, combined with strong ethical standards.
• Ownership mindset: Comfortable operating independently, taking accountability for outcomes, navigating ambiguity, and translating complex legal requirements into practical business solutions.
• Legal credentials: Undergraduate law degree from an accredited institution and active membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial or U.S. state bar.
