Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Float Pool Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 2 years MedSurg experience License: RN License required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: EPIC experience Description: This is a Float Pool position. Travelers will be required to float to various units where there are MedSurg patients, including Emergency Room Holding/Boarding. The patient types include General Medical Surgical and Oncology patients. Travelers will not administer chemotherapy but will care for oncology patients and patients receiving chemotherapy. There may be some pediatric patients on the floor, but no pediatric experience is required as travelers will not be expected to take pediatric patients. The general medical cases include cellulitis, GI bleeds, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Surgical cases will involve gallbladder, appendectomies, colectomies, ostomies, and TURPs. Observation patients may present with chest pain, dizziness, or syncope. Orthopedic cases include total hips, total knees, and shoulder surgeries. Neuro patients may present with spine surgeries, strokes, and altered mental status. Cardiac patients are post-procedure for catheterizations, TEE, and cardioversion. General cardiac cases may include heart failure, chest pain, and cardiac arrhythmias. Patient ratios for days are 1:4-6 and nights are 1:6. Required skills include management of chest tubes, stable trach management, IV skills, and port/central lines. Knowledge of CPAP, BiPAP, and Airvo equipment is necessary, with respiratory therapy managing the equipment. The traveler should be proficient in foley insertion/care, feeding tubes, and cardiac rhythm interpretation. Experience with titrating drips such as Cardizem, Amiodarone, Insulin, and Argatroban will require manager approval if not previously held. Support on the unit includes a Health Unit Coordinator available during the day and Certified Nursing Assistants for basic care tasks. Charge nurses take patient assignments, which may vary from full to reduced. Phlebotomy services are available for peripheral lab draws. For difficult venous access, the house supervisor will provide resources. Remote telemonitoring support is available with Tele tech on duty 24/7. The charting system used is EPIC, and EPIC experience is required. Travelers will likely float to various units where MedSurg patients are present. Scheduling includes weekend rotations every other weekend, with shift times from 1845-0715 and 0645-1915. Schedules are planned 4-6 weeks in advance, with notifications provided 2 weeks prior. Requests for time off must be approved by management. Holiday expectations may require working up to 50% of the holidays during a contract.
