Interior Designer

As an Interior Designer, you’ll guide customers through Stage 2 of COCOON’s Design Process, helping transform ideas and concepts into a complete, cohesive design. From cabinetry and countertops to tile, flooring, fixtures, and finishes, you’ll help customers make thoughtful selections that balance aesthetics, functionality, and budget.

Working closely with Project Advisors, Architecture, Cost Evaluation, Production, and other members of the Design team, you’ll ensure every detail is accurately documented and ready to move successfully into construction. This role is ideal for someone who combines creativity with strong organization, enjoys working directly with customers, and takes pride in creating an exceptional design experience.

This position reports directly to the Design Manager.

What You’ll Do

Customer Design & Selections

• Guide customers through Stage 2 of COCOON’s Design Process, from initial allowances through final selections and approvals.

• Help customers select cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, hardware, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, paint colors, and other renovation-specific finishes.

• Provide thoughtful design guidance while helping customers navigate options, budgets, and competing priorities.

• Create mood boards, renderings, material presentations, and other visual tools that help customers confidently envision their finished space.

• Conduct in-studio and in-home design meetings to review selections, answer questions, and maintain project momentum.

• Clearly communicate design timelines, expectations, decisions, and next steps throughout the process.

Design Development & Documentation

• Develop cohesive design concepts that align with customer goals, project scope, budget, and COCOON design standards.

• Create accurate plans, elevations, renderings, and other design documentation necessary to communicate design intent.

• Develop cabinetry layouts and collaborate with Cabinet Specialists on design details, functionality, and pricing.

• Maintain complete and accurate project selections, specifications, notes, approvals, and supporting documentation within Buildertrend.

• Review project documentation regularly to ensure selections and design details remain current and consistent.

• Ensure customer approvals are properly documented before materials are ordered or projects move into construction.

Project Coordination & Communication

• Partner closely with Project Advisors, Architecture, Cost Evaluation, Production, and other Design team members throughout the project lifecycle.

• Schedule, prepare for, and lead customer design meetings, internal huddles, and project reviews.

• Communicate design changes, outstanding decisions, potential concerns, and project needs promptly to the appropriate team members.

• Coordinate with internal teams to ensure design information is complete and ready for estimating, contracting, ordering, and production.

• Support a smooth transition from Stage 2 into the next phase of the COCOON process.

Budget & Selection Management

• Track customer selections against established project allowances and budgets.

• Help customers understand the financial impact of selections and alternatives throughout the design process.

• Collaborate with the Cost Evaluation team to reconcile selection pricing prior to contract finalization.

• Identify selections or design decisions that may create budget, scheduling, or construction concerns and communicate them proactively.

• Confirm final selections, pricing, and approvals are complete before projects move forward.

Design Quality & Process

• Maintain a high standard of design quality, accuracy, and attention to detail across all assigned projects.

• Follow COCOON’s standard operating procedures for design development, documentation, customer communication, and project management.

• Stay current on residential design trends, materials, finishes, products, and industry developments.

• Balance creativity with functionality, constructability, budget, and customer expectations.

• Manage multiple active projects while consistently meeting deadlines and maintaining accurate documentation.

• Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through on outstanding decisions and action items.

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the needs of the Design team and organization.

What You’ll Bring

• 3+ years of experience in residential interior design.

• Formal education in Interior Design or equivalent professional experience.

• Strong knowledge of residential materials, finishes, cabinetry, fixtures, and design principles.

• Experience guiding customers through finish selections and complex design decisions.

• Experience developing plans, elevations, renderings, and presentation materials.

• Proficiency with Chief Architect, 2020 Design, and Microsoft Office 365.

• Experience with Buildertrend or similar project management software is preferred.

• Strong understanding of how design selections impact project budgets and construction.

• Exceptional organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
