TCAH's programs and services include on-site SNAP and healthcare enrollment, benefits access, job referrals, assistance with applications for city services including housing, workforce development programs for youth, a client choice super pantry, inter-generational nutrition programs, urban farming and farmer's markets, café and community food distribution. With an annual budget of $21 million and a staff size of 100, TCAH is looking to expand its dynamic team.Job SummaryThe Accounting Director is responsible for managing the organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance with government, individual, corporation and foundation funding requirements. The Accounting Director will serve as the senior accounting professional responsible for day-to-day accounting oversight, grant management, audits, and financial reporting. The Accounting Director will supervise accounting staff and work closely with the CEO, COO, CDO, and program leadership to ensure that all financial activities align with nonprofit best practices and the requirements of city, state, and federal grants. The ideal candidate has strong nonprofit accounting experience and a demonstrated track record managing government grants, reimbursement-based contracts, and compliance reporting.ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management and Accounting OperationsOversee all accounting operations including accounts payable, receivable, payroll coordination, and general ledger managementMaintain the integrity of the organization's financial records and accounting systemsManage monthly financial closings and ensure accurate financial reportingMonitor organizational cash flow and provide financial analysis to leadershipMaintain and update the chart of accounts within QuickBooks EnterpriseEnsure all financial transactions are properly documented and codedGrant and Contract Financial ManagementOversee financial management of city, state, and federal grants and contractsEnsure compliance with grant budgets, allowable cost guidelines, and reporting requirementsWork closely with program managers to monitor grant spending and budget alignmentTrack restricted funding and maintain accurate grant allocationsPrepare financial reports required by government agencies and private fundersSupport reimbursement submissions and documentation for government contractsEnsure readiness for grant monitoring visits and financial reviewsBudgeting and Financial PlanningLead the preparation of the organization's annual operating budgetWork with department heads to develop program budgets and financial forecastsMonitor departmental spending against approved budgetsProvide financial analysis to support operational planning and funding decisionsAudit and ComplianceServe as the primary liaison with external auditors and the outside CPA to coordinate the annual Form 990 and financial auditEnsure audits are completed within six months of fiscal year-end and presented for Board reviewPrepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and respond to auditor requestsEnsure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standardsMaintain and strengthen internal financial controls, policies, and proceduresEnsure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial reporting requirementsOversee payroll processes to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely reportingStaff Supervision and Department LeadershipSupervise accounting staff and oversee efficient day-to-day financial operationsProvide guidance, training, and professional development to accounting personnelEstablish and enforce clear accounting procedures and internal controlsPromote cross-department collaboration between finance, operations, and program teamsQualificationsQualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldMinimum 5–7 years nonprofit accounting experienceDemonstrated experience managing government grants (federal, state, or city)Experience working with reimbursement-based contracts and grant reportingStrong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standardsExperience coordinating annual financial auditsExperience managing reimbursement-based government contracts and preparing supporting financial documentationExperience with QuickBooks Enterprise or similar nonprofit accounting systemsExperience managing multiple restricted grants and cost allocations across programsFamiliarity with nonprofit compliance requirements, grant monitoring, and audit preparationExperience with payroll and HR systems such as Paychex Flex or PaycomFamiliarity with government grant and contract platforms such as Grants.gov, HHS Accelerator, or NYC PassportStrong proficiency in Excel for financial analysis and grant trackingExperience working in organizations with multiple programs and funding streamsProfessional SkillsStrong analytical and financial reporting skillsExcellent attention to detail and organizational abilityAbility to manage multiple deadlines and prioritiesStrong communication and collaboration skillsHigh ethical standards and ability to maintain confidentialityCommitment to the mission of hunger relief and food justiceWorking ConditionsThis is a full-time position based in Brooklyn, NY.
