Overview Job Title: Research Faculty - Department of Surgery/Division of Trauma Critical Care and Burn Surgery (Open Rank/Track) Department: Medicine | Surgery Colon and Rectal Faculty – Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Burn (Open Rank/Track) This position is 100% research. Position Overview The Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Burn Surgery is seeking highly qualified PhD level candidates to join its cutting-edge research team. The Division, within the Department of Surgery, wishes to expand its breadth of basic and translational research. Using a foundation of clinical care across trauma, complex emergency general surgery, and high-volume surgical critical care, we seek funded researchers who can leverage this clinical excellence and access to patients and biospecimen samples into basic and translational scientific success. Expertise in sepsis, inflammation, infection, and immune cell function is a plus. The Division has a strong track record of publication, grant writing, and funding, which we seek to expand by creating a collaborative science model between our clinicians, clinician-scientists, and scientists. Duties and Responsibilities Conceptualizes, plans, designs, implements and conducts research studies; develops and writes grant proposals to seek and obtain extramural funding to support research program; obtains and maintains NIH R01 or equivalent funding; Writes and publishes research in high quality peer reviewed, scientific journals; attends and makes presentations of research at national and international scientific conferences; develops national and international scholarly reputation; Instructs and mentors junior scientists, doctoral and postdoctoral students, medical students, residents and fellow trainees; participates in department, college and university committees and initiatives. Requirements PhD or MD/PhD in an applicable field Postdoctoral research experience in basic science research Proven ability to write scientific reports and publish in scientific, peer-reviewed journals preferred Current, active extramural grant funding (equivalent to NIH R01) Academic experience a plus Qualify for academic appointment at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level – Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience Department/Division Overview The Department of Surgery, led by Dr. Timothy Pawlik, boasts a broad array of clinical, research and educational opportunities. The department is home to multiple R01 funded researchers, several training grants, and with over $15.5M in NIH funding, was ranked #11 in the Blue Ridge Rankings among departments of surgery nationally. Our investigators collectively occupy over 25,000 square feet of laboratory space within and around the medical center campus. Formed in 2006, the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Burn provides surgical care for multiple trauma, burns, urgent and emergent general surgery conditions and surgical critical care. The clinical, translational and basic science research efforts of our clinical scientists and dedicated basic science researchers investigate sepsis, trauma and surgical emergencies. The division has multiple NIH funded translational surgeon-scientists with a track record of development from mentored awards to independent scientists. Additional Information Faculty Defined Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research. Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care. Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.
