About The Department The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago is a dynamic place to work. The NICU in Comer Children's Hospital has 71 beds and is one of the largest Level III NICUs in Chicago, a major referral center for the sickest newborns, with close to 850 admissions per year and over 21,000 patient bed-days. It collaborates with the Maternal-Fetal Service to run the University of Chicago Perinatal Network with over 10 affiliated community hospitals. The Small Baby Unit serves the most premature infants less than or equal to 28 weeks. Department BSD PED - Neonatology - Comer Job Summary The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems, in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee. Responsibilities Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee. Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider. Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol. Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed. Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals as needed. Stabilize and transport patients as needed. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to practice. Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate. Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care. Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care. Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures. Participate in developing and implementing quality improvement (QI) monitoring. Participate in providing in-service and outreach education programs. Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit. May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians. Serve as preceptor to APP students. Evaluate goals and outcomes considering benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for patient, family, and organization. Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care. Have a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations; develop and coordinate APP training and professional development activities. Performs other related work as needed. Education and Qualifications Minimum Qualifications College or university degree from an accredited school/college. Work Experience Knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related discipline. Certifications Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO) - State of Illinois. Preferred Qualifications Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. Completion of approved NNP training. 2 years of clinical experience in level III or level IV NICU as a NICU nurse or NICU APP. Licenses and Certifications For Neonatal Nurse Practitioner: NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner; Illinois APN license by start date; RN license in Illinois or eligibility; mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number upon licensing. For Physician Assistant: NRP certification; Illinois PA license by start date; NCCPA certification by start date; mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number upon licensing. Preferred Competencies Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, and line placement. Excellent clinical, management, and organizational skills. Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments. Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional, respectful, and compassionate manner. Proficiency in EPIC and use of computers. Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners. Ability to document and bill for services provided. Detail-oriented and able to work under pressure. Ability to use independent judgment and communicate effectively. Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire. Working Conditions Clinical care setting. May require on-call or after-hours coverage. Exposure to human blood, blood components, and infectious material. High-stress environment. May staff other sites as required by neonatology coverage agreements.
