Surgical Technologist

Job Summary:

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field, equipment, instruments, and supplies required during surgical procedures. This role requires a thorough understanding of surgical procedures to anticipate and meet the needs of the surgical team efficiently. The Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety and smooth operation flow in the operating room. Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and organize surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies prior to surgery.
  • Maintain the sterile field and ensure adherence to aseptic techniques throughout the procedure.
  • Anticipate the needs of surgeons and surgical staff during the operation.
  • Assist in draping and positioning patients for surgery.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants during procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of surgical specimens and waste.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of the operating room after surgery.
  • Document surgical procedures and maintain accurate records in electronic medical systems.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program recognized by CAAHEP or ABHES, or certification from NBSTA.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • 3 to 5 years of surgical technologist experience.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and sterile techniques.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Proficiency in medical terminology.
  • Experience with electronic medical record documentation.
Special Considerations:
  • Must maintain strict sterile environment and adhere to infection control policies.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure surgical settings.
  • May require availability for on-call shifts or emergency surgeries.
Scheduling:
  • Work schedule typically aligns with surgical case schedules; may include day, evening, or weekend shifts based on surgical volume and facility needs.
