Licensed Practical Nurse
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties. This includes execution of physician orders. The Licensed Practical Nurse operates pill call and sick call. Assists the physician in examinations and treatments. Performs technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their license. The role includes applying appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents. Prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined. Prepares the examining room and equipment. Operates pill call, dispenses medication and documents as required by applicable policies. Controls medication, syringes, and other medical supplies. Maintains inventory as required by established procedures. Performs emergency procedures as needed. Keeps equipment and work area clean, utilizing appropriate sanitation methods. Documents and reports activities following established policies.
Responsibilities include: Assisting the supervisor with the evaluation of all medical services. Maintaining the security and confidentiality of all medical records. Observing and recording inmate/resident behavior. Inspecting the medical unit for possible contraband items. Securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment. Assisting with preparing and maintaining a variety of records and reports. Reading, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures. Responding to lawsuits via corporate counsel and attending court hearings if necessary. Conducting research of charts and reviewing inmate/resident health problems. Effectively communicating with administration, staff, and the general public. Evaluating and recommending physical safety requirements for a safe working environment. Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and approved medical services. Preparing and disseminating safety and accident reports as required. Taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies. Escorting inmates/residents or coordinating their movement for medical treatment. Initiating and completing investigations with accuracy as directed. Engaging in functions in confined areas, including working rotating shifts. Being aware of the possibility of verbal abuse in a hostile environment.
