Job Summary This position is located in Facilities Management Services at the Bedford VA Healthcare System in Bedford, Massachusetts. It is a permanent, full‑time position, requiring 40 hours per week. Responsibilities Perform repair, overhaul, modification, testing, and installation of a variety of locking devices found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. Manufacture and duplicate keys, set keying and combinations for locking mechanisms. Establish master keying systems and neutralize lockouts. Determine precise drilling locations and angles to avoid damage to contents or locking mechanisms. Design and install locks and integrated locking systems, including electronic panic button interfaces. Use a variety of tools and skills to work with total accuracy and avoid destruction of expensive security systems, safes, or vaults. Disassemble, repair, clean, reassemble, and reinstall a large variety of moderate to extremely complex locking devices. Read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, manufacturer diagrams, specifications and prepare diagrams to identify dimensions or special parts requirements. Provide technical assistance and guidance to remote customer locations and to lower‑graded or less experienced locksmithing personnel. Troubleshoot malfunctioning components and repair by reworking existing parts based on knowledge of internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide range of models. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Current, valid, state‑issued driver’s license; must present license at interview. No specific length of training or experience required; must demonstrate sufficient scope and quality of knowledge, skills, and ability to perform duties, supported by detailed resume descriptions. Experience will be evaluated against the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards, beginning with a screen‑out element (question 1 of the online questionnaire). Eligible applicants will be further rated on remaining job elements including dexterity and safety equipment assembly, installation, repair, interpreting instructions and specifications, electrical and electronic technical practices, and troubleshooting. Preferred experience includes ability to lift up to 50 pounds and physically withstand walking, bending, stooping, standing, and working in close or awkward spaces for extended periods. Experience may be paid, unpaid, or volunteer work (e.g., National Service programs). Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Regularly lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. Stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and work in cramped and awkward positions for prolonged periods. Work in well‑lighted, heated, and ventilated indoor areas; occasional outdoor work in inclement weather or poorly lighted drafty areas. Potential exposure to cuts, bruises, scrapes, and burns; operation of dangerous equipment such as key‑cutting machines, electric grinders, and soldering irons requires shields and proper safety equipment. Travel to other VA campuses and CBOCs may be required. Work Schedule Monday‑Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; compressed/flexible schedule not authorized.
