Quality Technician (2p-10p)

Summary

The Quality Technician is responsible for ensuring that products manufactured through the high-pressure die casting (HPDC) process meet customer specifications, internal quality standards, and industry requirements. This position performs inspections, audits, testing, and documentation while working closely with Production, Engineering, and Maintenance to identify and resolve quality concerns. The Quality Technician plays a key role in driving continuous improvement and maintaining customer satisfaction.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of die cast components.
• Verify product conformance using precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), when applicable.
• Conduct visual inspections for common die casting defects such as porosity, cold shuts, flash, blisters, misruns, soldering, cracks, and dimensional nonconformance.
• Complete layered process audits, product audits, and inspection documentation.
• Review production against engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, control plans, and work instructions.
• Collect, record, and analyze quality data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Initiate and document nonconforming material reports (NCMRs) and assist with containment activities.
• Support root cause investigations using quality tools such as 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, Pareto Analysis, and corrective actions.
• Assist with PPAP activities, FAI inspections, capability studies, and gauge validation.
• Participate in customer and third-party audits as required.
• Verify compliance with ISO 9001 and/or IATF 16949 quality management system requirements.
• Communicate quality issues effectively with production, engineering, supervisors, and customers when necessary.
• Assist in developing and updating quality procedures, inspection instructions, and standard work.
• Promote safe work practices and maintain a clean work environment.

Position Reports to the Quality Control Manager

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum of 2 years of manufacturing quality experience.
• Experience in a high-pressure die casting or metal manufacturing environment preferred.
• Ability to read engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
• Basic understanding of GD&T.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred

• Associate degree in Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, or Quality.
• ASQ Certified Quality Technician (CQT) or equivalent certification.
• Experience with CMM operation and programming.
• Experience with SPC, MSA, PFMEA, Control Plans, and PPAP documentation.
• Knowledge of aluminum or magnesium die casting processes.

Skills:

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Understanding of statistical process control (SPC).
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Frequently lift up to 35 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance.
• Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing stairs.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise, and exposure to industrial equipment.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
