Youth Engagement Specialist (Civic Engagement / Nonprofit)

New York, NY (In-Office) | Full-Time | $80,000 - $90,000/year About the Role A nonpartisan, independent New York City agency focused on empowering civic participation and increasing election transparency is hiring a Youth Engagement Specialist to lead voter education and engagement efforts for young New Yorkers ages 14 to 24. The role sits within the agency’s community engagement unit, which builds partnerships across the city to disseminate voting information and deliver accessible voter education programming. The specialist will develop and facilitate workshops, plan and execute community events, build train-the-trainer sessions for educators and youth leaders, partner with public schools, and create programming that builds civic knowledge, leadership, and long-term capacity for democratic participation. Topics covered include civic engagement, local history, campaign finance, and more. The agency is especially interested in candidates with lived or professional experience developing youth programming in communities with low youth voter turnout, particularly in the South Bronx and East New York. Success in this role depends on strong interpersonal skills, cultural competency, and an understanding of the structural barriers that can limit young people’s participation in civic life. What the Role Covers Researching and identifying partner organizations including city agencies, community-based organizations, nonprofits, and advocacy groups to expand outreach Developing and implementing partnership-building plans for assigned geographies aligned with strategic goals Managing and evaluating paid partnership opportunities with organizations in priority neighborhoods Creating collaborative initiatives, advisory opportunities, co-created programming, and community feedback mechanisms with partners Convening partners through meetings, listening sessions, advisory groups, and networking opportunities Developing educational content on civic engagement, voter participation, and accessibility tools tailored for youth audiences in priority neighborhoods Planning and delivering community conversations, trainings, and workshops in both virtual and in-person formats Facilitating sessions in varied formats (conversation circles, presentations, classroom-style activities) appropriate to audience needs and engagement levels Developing and implementing methods to collect and incorporate audience feedback including surveys and follow-up outreach Collecting, maintaining, and updating data for all assigned projects using CRM and project management tools Tracking partner data including contact information, meeting notes, relationship history, and event outcomes Qualifications Bachelor’s degree with at least 12 semester credits in a relevant field (accounting, public administration, computer science, economics, or closely related area) plus one year of relevant full-time experience; or a high school diploma with five years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience Strong public speaking and workshop facilitation skills Ability to build trust with diverse communities, especially historically underrepresented groups Ability to communicate effectively across diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural groups Ability to break down complex civic topics into age-appropriate content Understanding of high school and college-age youth populations in NYC, including barriers to access Basic proficiency with PowerPoint High emotional intelligence and relational awareness Knowledge of best practices and safety protocols for working with minors Preferred Previous experience with elections and voting work, especially in NYC Experience working in NYC Public Schools or building curriculum around history, social studies, or civic engagement Proficiency in one or more of the agency’s covered languages Compensation and Benefits $80,000 - $90,000/year Generous medical, dental, and vision benefits Flexible and hybrid work schedule Career development and leadership training opportunities Wellness programs PSLF qualifying employer #J-18808-Ljbffr Mediabistro
