The unit has 33 beds with an average daily census of 16 patients. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:2-3 for adults. Common diagnoses include trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, sepsis, post-stent care, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, and respiratory distress. Registered nurses are required to titrate drips and handle titratable and set rate drips, including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation. Nurse aides are available based on census and may assist on the floor as needed. Healthcare support technicians are available three days per week for additional support. The team works with various respiratory equipment, including vents, CPAP, BiPap, and high flow oxygen. Registered nurses will be responsible for troubleshooting respiratory equipment. RNs are required to read, interpret, and document telemetry strips. Floating to the progressive care unit or occasionally to medical-surgical units may be required, maintaining the same patient ratio. There are holiday requirements, with a minimum of two holidays required during the contract term. Weekend work is expected every other weekend. The charting system used is electronic health records. The role is set in an acute care setting within a nursing division.
