Registered Nurse II (RN) Oncology/Hematology

Overview Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Hospital Full-Time Dayshift-Medical Center At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN II collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies, and acts as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. This role assumes leadership with progressive responsibility, including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management. Responsibilities Provide professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, including comprehensive assessments and education. Communicate and collaborate with physicians and interprofessional health care team to facilitate high-quality patient outcomes. Demonstrate clinical competence in care delivery, medication administration, procedures, and emergency management. Assume leadership roles, participate in unit governance, and serve as charge nurse or preceptor as appropriate. Qualifications Education : Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section. Experience : Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licenses and Certifications (Required): RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency). BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). Chemotherapy credential: FCIA or ONS-CICC, or ONS-CICR (current incumbents have one year) within 90 days. Preferred : Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification. Knowledge and Abilities : Proficient in English (speaking, reading, writing) to perform essential functions, especially where safety is involved. Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and staff with customer service focus. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize tasks. Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with the care team and patients. Critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. Proficient time management and professional contributions per Clinical Career Path program. Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and basic software. Completion of HM Chemotherapy course within 90 days of hire/transfer (applies to hires after 9/21/25). Develops and communicates plan of care, prioritizes care, and advocates for patients/families. Provides patient teaching and evaluates comprehension; plans for post-discharge care. Supports improvements in patient satisfaction through service standards. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Follows nursing process standards and regulatory requirements; documents accurately to support safety and core measures. Coordinates care for complex patients with the interprofessional team; uses evidence-based practice. Contributes to improved quality and safety scores through accountability and collaboration. Finance Essential Functions Manages time, documents care timely, minimizes overtime, and provides input on unit resources and budget needs. Contributes to meeting department financial targets by improving efficiency and reducing length of stay where applicable. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identifies opportunities for innovation and efficiency using evidence-based practice and performance improvement projects. Supports new care pathways and service line initiatives; explores changes and presents options to governance and leadership. Supplemental Requirements Work Attire : Scrubs required; uniforms not required; other department-approved attire as applicable. On-Call : May be required during emergencies; On Call Yes. Travel : Travel within the Houston Metropolitan area may be required; some roles may require travel outside the area.
