Job Profile Summary This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. The role includes performing Clinical Nurse duties such as assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care needs of a designated group of patients or providing nursing care and identified clinical support tasks within the scope of practice to achieve the patient's plan of care as directed. The position requires a nursing license and serves as an individual contributor who may direct the work of other lower‑level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation, or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. It is a senior‑level role that requires advanced knowledge typically obtained through advanced education and work experience, often responsible for managing projects/processes, working independently with limited supervision, coaching and reviewing the work of lower‑level professionals, and resolving difficult and complex problems. Job Overview The professional registered nurse possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary for the delivery and management of patient care from admission through discharge. The nurse is knowledgeable of current trends in healthcare including advances in technology, pharmacology, treatment care modalities, quality and patient safety. The role serves as a patient and family advocate while facilitating a cooperative and collaborative environment among all health care providers. The nurse is responsible for the planning, delivery and management of patient/family centered care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice embedded in research, evidence‑based practice and/or best practices. Job Description Minimum Qualifications Registered Nurse (RN) license. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Certifications such as ACLS or PALS may be required, depending on the department and type of care. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Specialty Nursing certifications. Duties and Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all‑inclusive list. Other duties may be assigned. Utilize theoretical and evidence‑based knowledge to partner with patients and families to assess, plan, implement and evaluate age‑appropriate care. Assess and collaborate with patients, families/significant others and other disciplines to identify expected outcomes based on synthesis of data and diagnosis, and identify cultural needs to develop enhanced care plans. Plan and develop individualized, outcomes‑based care plans incorporating patient and family readiness and barriers to learning; orchestrate and validate a plan of care for each shift; initiate interdisciplinary patient/family meetings; coordinate discharge plans using unit‑based and community resources. Implement the plan safely and timely, document modifications, collaborate with nursing colleagues and others, and utilize evidence‑based interventions and treatments specific to the diagnosis or problem. Evaluate effectiveness of the planned strategies, update the plan of care based on patient response, and use the evaluation process to adjust interventions. Demonstrate and apply the skill and judgement necessary to implement the nursing plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures based on critical thinking and inquiry. Perform procedures and treatments using nursing knowledge and judgment according to established guidelines and professional standards. Safely administer and assess medication responses using essential pharmacology knowledge and department standards of care. Maintain clinical competency with respect to technology and utilize equipment safely. Advocate for and educate patients and families. Provide high quality care efficiently and safely; use data trends to improve clinical practice. Participate in patient safety and quality activities both unit‑based and hospital‑wide, supporting initiatives such as The Joint Commission and NPSGs. Engage in performance improvement activities through data collection, analysis and evaluation. Champion quality, safety, regulatory compliance and patient family satisfaction. Facilitate cooperative and collaborative relationships among disciplines to ensure effective quality patient care delivery and a professional work environment. Delegate responsibilities appropriately and influence others to achieve service excellence by establishing a climate of optimal patient care, collegial relationships and professional development. Participate in professional development and lifelong learning activities to maintain competence, enhance practice and support career goals; maintain licensure and meet state practice act requirements. Precept and mentor newly hired staff and nursing students. May assume charge nurse functions in collaboration with unit leadership. Facilitate communication by sharing job‑related information, maintaining professional conduct and participating in staff meetings and related documentation. Physical Requirements Prolonged standing or walking. Lift, position, push and/or transfer patients and equipment. Reach, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch extensively. Regular exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise and possible radiation or electrical hazards. Regular exposure to risk of bloodborne diseases and other transmissible infections. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposure to varying and unpredictable situations, including emergencies and crisis. Irregular hours. Potential contact with hazardous materials. Skills and Abilities Possess and apply knowledge for delivering care across the lifespan, considering aging, human development and cultural patterns. Provide care to a designated patient group in accordance with unit guidelines and hospital policies, procedures and protocols. Understand growth and development, interpret age‑specific data and respond appropriately to care; provide age‑appropriate communication.
