Physical Education Teacher and Athletic Director Job Purpose: At Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart, we measure success one student at a time, and we seek to provide an education that meets the needs of the whole child. The small class sizes and attentive faculty allow us to focus on understanding the unique educational needs of each student, helping students discover their unique gifts and fostering a passion for education, service, wellness, and faith. This position focuses on physical education, health, and athletics. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching high school physical education and health‑related classes as well as serving as the Athletic Director for the school. Responsibilities Teach high‑school physical education and health‑related classes. Develop and implement daily lesson plans for students. Assist in the development of curriculum standards and mapping across the school. Develop common assessments, both formative and summative, that measure progress toward academic standards. Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies aimed at keeping classes focused from bell to bell and infusing a lasting desire to learn. Integrate technology effectively into the curriculum. Actively pursue professional development opportunities. Be open to constructive feedback on ways in which you can improve your classroom and curriculum and ensure that students master grade‑level standards. Maintain and communicate high academic and personal expectations for all students. Engage in effective and consistent classroom management for students and faculty by demonstrating respect for and adherence to school‑wide policies and classroom standards as established by leadership. Develop, implement, and articulate an athletic program designed to build a sense of community among the student athletes, as well as a commitment to personal growth. Oversee the implementation of the school’s athletic programs including scheduling try‑outs, practices, and games in accordance with conference and IHSA rules; purchasing and maintaining equipment and uniforms; supervising all home games; and hiring and maintaining a positive relationship with all athletic coaches and officials. Manage the annual athletic budget. Establish metrics of success and evaluate them against the athletics programs. Monitor student‑athlete eligibility on a weekly basis.Model the practices of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Implement, refine, and enforce athletic policies congruent with the Sacred Heart Goals focused on community and professional growth. Maintain appropriate student information: medical records, athletic conduct codes, parent agreements, etc. Plan and supervise an athletic awards ceremony or banquet. Update student/parent handbook and the school’s Crisis Management Plan with appropriate changes. Partner with applicable team members for weekly updates on game dates, scores, and other information on the school website and athletic social media accounts. Engage with students by clearly articulating the athletic programs, requirements, procedures, and deadlines; enforcing the rules outlined in the athletics code of conduct and monitoring students’ health and wellness progress. Provide constructive feedback to peers and support them in their teaching efforts. Engage student families frequently to celebrate successes and communicate challenges. Participate in school activities, faculty and department meetings, in‑service programs, parent‑teacher conferences, and other extracurricular activities as requested or approved. Be a flexible and cooperative member of the faculty and community who is willing to collaborate on departmental and school goals. Be an active member of the faculty and community by participating in extracurricular activities such as serving on committees, advising clubs, attending school‑related events, and participating in activities that assist in building community. Other duties as assigned that pertain to the role. Requirements Bachelor’s degree. Strong organizational skills and the ability to develop a rapport with students and families and deliver standard‑based, culturally relevant curriculum. Commitment to the school’s mission. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to apply principles and practices of sound management and supervisory methods. Competence in a variety of computer applications, including Powerschool, word processing, databases, and spreadsheets. Experience working in a school, non‑profit, or for‑profit organization with experience and interest in: teaching high‑school subjects, classroom management, curriculum development and implementation, program development and management. Bi‑lingual. LBS1 certified. ESL certified. Dynamic leadership skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities. Ability to analyze information and communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences.
