Registered Nurse Operating Room

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for delivering skilled nursing care to surgical patients in an acute care hospital setting. This role involves preparing patients for surgery, assisting during procedures, monitoring patient status, and collaborating with the surgical team to ensure optimal outcomes. The RN must have strong clinical skills, particularly in surgical nursing, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required, with weekend and holiday call responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

• Provide perioperative nursing care including patient assessment, preparation, and monitoring during surgical procedures.
• Assist surgeons and surgical team members during operations, ensuring sterile technique and patient safety.
• Administer medications and treatments as ordered, and document care accurately in the electronic medical record system (Epic preferred).
• Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care and respond to emergencies.
• Float between main OR and outpatient surgery center as needed to meet unit demands.
• Participate in weekend and holiday call rotations to provide coverage and support surgical services.
• Maintain compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and infection control protocols.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in the state of practice.
• Minimum of 2 years of RN experience with surgical procedures; 3 years preferred.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
• Strong clinical skills in perioperative nursing and patient care.
• Proficiency with Epic electronic health records system highly preferred.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and participate in call rotations.
• Reliable transportation within a 50-mile radius and ability to float between units.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Experience with surgical specialties and procedures relevant to the unit.
• Previous experience in an acute care hospital operating room setting.

Special Considerations:

• Weekend and holiday call required, with an estimated 70-90 hours in a 6-week period split evenly among staff.
• Call coverage may exceed every other weekend to meet unit needs.
• Floating between main OR and outpatient surgery center is expected.
• Requests for scheduling due to outside employment will not be accommodated.
• First-time travelers are not accepted; local candidates preferred.
• Return to Office (RTO) restrictions must be included at time of application submission.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule includes weekend and holiday shifts, with call coverage from 0700 to 0700.
• Shift assignments and block scheduling are at manager's discretion.
• Guaranteed hours with the possibility of being called off once per two-week pay period.
