Histology Technician - RWJBarnabas Health

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, you will play an essential role in preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination, performing routine histology procedures, and partnering with an interdisciplinary team to promote clinical accuracy and improve patient outcomes. A typical day for a Histology Technician may include:

• Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor while processing tissue specimens through fixation, embedding, and sectioning.
• Performing high-quality microtomy to produce exceptional tissue slides for microscopic examination.
• Conducting routine staining procedures, including Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E), to ensure crisp cellular detail.
• Prepares, maintains, and continuously monitors reagents and solutions to ensure chemical standards remain current, relevant, and evidence-based.
• Evaluating slide quality and proactively performing corrective actions to meet strict pathological standards.
• Maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting histology laboratory equipment in accordance with established departmental timeframes.
• Completing detailed laboratory activity logs, results, and all required clinical and technical documentation within regulatory standards.
• Adhering to RWJBarnabas Health organizational competencies, safety standards, and corporate codes of behavior.

To be considered for this Histology Technician opportunity, you will have:

• Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology, histology, or a closely related scientific field required.
• Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) by the ASCP or equivalent preferred, OR eligibility to obtain certification within one year of hire.
• 1-3 years of clinical experience performing histology or laboratory testing procedures required.
• Demonstrated competence in tissue embedding, sectioning, microtomy, and routine staining.
• Experience working in an acute care hospital laboratory setting preferred.
• Training or experience in advanced immunohistochemistry (IHC) or special stains is a plus.
• Demonstrated knowledge of working with complex automated laboratory instrumentation and processing software.
• Strong technical assessment, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to complete laboratory documentation accurately and within established regulatory deadlines.
• A commitment to compassionate, safety-oriented, patient-centered care and ongoing professional development.
• Scheduling requirements: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm.
