GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports district schools and principals in fostering an optimal educational environment for students. Instructs student athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. Also teaches moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self‑discipline, and self‑confidence. The success of athletic programs strongly influences the community’s image. Public exposure and community/parent pressure for winning performance are taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. Includes other aspects such as extended time, risk of injury and due process predicaments.

MAJOR TASKS

Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the governing board, and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff. Understands the proper administrative line of command and references all requests or concerns through proper channels; attends required public, staff, and department meetings. Manages a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the district activities director and the respective staff. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught, designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure overall program cohesion. Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by promoting clinic attendance per local policy. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season’s end analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. Maintains discipline, addresses concerns, and works to increase morale and cooperation. Assists the district activities director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events. Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices, adheres to facility times, and coordinates the program with maintenance and school employees. Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and site. Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes. Provides training rules and unique regulations of the sport to each athlete. Gives constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct. By his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant. Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Completes reports of all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours. Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when necessary, and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. Participates in the budget process with the district activities; recommends equipment guidelines and remains responsible for operating within budget appropriations. Is accountable for all equipment and collects costs for lost or missing items; arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of the specific sport; properly marks and identifies equipment before issuing or storing. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices. Permits athletes to enter authorized areas at appropriate times. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and checks general cleanliness of the facility. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building when custodians are not on duty. Instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use. Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre‑season meetings. Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes who are not participating and through news media, little league programs, or other approved publicity vehicles. Ensures quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media. Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Arizona Department of Education Teaching Certification or Athletic Coaching Certification preferred. Completion of NFHS Coaching Education Program/Arizona Interscholastic Association certifications. Must have a valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card. Must be employed in the school district. Must have the ability to organize and supervise a sports program. Must have previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport. Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and maintain ongoing study of new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

SUPERVISION

Position receives supervision from the Principal.

EVALUATION
