Based on current Salary Schedule, may vary depending on years of service, experience and verified by a West Virginia School System, plus any applicable supplements per Mineral County School Salary Schedule. Job Summary To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator. Performance Responsibilities Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean, and free of litter at all times; Disinfects all water fountains, floors in the restrooms, commodes, urinals, and sinks every day; Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, or more frequently if necessary; Performs ground‑keeping duties as assigned; Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation; Secures all windows and doors, turns off all lights (except emergency lights), and arms any alarm systems at the end of each day; Regulates heat, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems to provide a temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity (Energy Program); Performs minor maintenance repairs. Reports any major repairs to the principal; Moves furniture or equipment within the buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal; Remains on the school premises during the school hours and during non‑school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance has been required by the principal. The custodian is responsible for having the building ready for any night activities and any other activities which are regularly held at the school; Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair; Performs supportive duties such as: Displays flag (state and country); Flies flag at half staff; Inventories supplies; Reports safety hazards within building; Stores equipment; Services carpeted areas; Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs the head custodian or principal of needs in advance so as not to hinder the continued performance of the assigned duties; Complies with county policies; Receives permission from building principal/supervisor to work in excess of 40 hours per week; Corrects minor safety hazards when observed and/or immediately refers major safety hazards to building supervisor; Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity; Maintains positive work habits; Performs duties efficiently and productively; Maintains and/or upgrades skills; Promotes and maintains positive pupil‑staff‑community relations; Adheres to Employee Code of Conduct as outlined in Mineral County School's Policy 4210; Maintains regular attendance; Performs duties as assigned by immediate supervisor(s). Qualifications Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state‑approved competency test), as required; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and the general public; Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of the position; Ability to interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, other maintenance staff, and business contacts from outside the county; Ability to pass written and physical tests that are directly related to the position; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community; Ability to perform duties in full compliance with all county requirements and the Board of Education policies; Ability to read and comply with labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials; Ability to perform strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties; Ability to work under minimal or no supervision; be an effective self‑starter; Ability to understand and follow both written and oral directions; Complete necessary training and in‑service as required by the county; Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of the position; Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Physical Demands Frequent stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see, climb a ladder (minimum six feet), and use repetitive motions. Often required to lift and move up to 75 pounds of materials. Work Environment Temperature can range from below freezing to above 90°F in furnace rooms, kitchen areas, or rooftops. Work surface can be slippery when mopping/stripping floors or completing snow removal. Noise level is moderate loud to very loud (60–90 dB). Policies and Code of Conduct The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances affecting employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated. Custodian IV Addendum Provides effective leadership and supervision to school custodians; Implements a system to monitor productivity; Schedules and implements summer cleaning activities; Schedules and implements inclement weather/snow removal activities; Observes the quality of custodial services through observations and walk‑throughs; Maintains an open communication among school custodians, school administration, and county supervisors.
