Description Brief Summary : Develops and implements nutrition plans, prevention strategies, counseling and education to improve the health and physical conditions of patients. Supervises nutritional program activities for the communities served by SSMH. Essential Job Functions:
- Develops goals and objectives for the Nutritional and Dietary Services Program according to guidelines established by SSMH and its overseeing regulatory agencies.
- Assesses patient nutritional status and plan patient-centered menus; Modifies diets to meet specific patient needs for food and nutrients.
- Observes and provides feedback to workers engaged in preparation and serving of meals. Coordinates recipe development and standardization.
- Review, select, and develop education and counseling on nutrition for a variety of patients based on health specific needs including but not limited to weight management, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, failure to thrive, and renal disease.
- Provide education to clients and family members regarding self-care, maintaining optimal health, and preventing complications. Develops curriculum and prepares manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching.
- Assess community, institutional, and family support systems and resources.
- Collaborate with other hospital departments, medical staff, and community resources to promote good health, aid in the prevention of nutrition-related illnesses, and optimize nutritional care for patients with a variety of illnesses. Follow up on referrals and make referrals as needed both internally and externally.
- Conduct educational assessments of clients and develop individual and family diabetes (as well as other nutrition related illnesses) self-care plans consistent with cultural, social, and psychological requirements.
- Plan and participate in teaching and training to expand services and increase public awareness of healthy diet, diabetes control and prevention.
- Assist with established clients or newly diagnosed patients with nutritional and diabetes needs as indicated.
- Teach diabetes prevention strategies and recommend lifestyle changes. Educate patients about practical aspects of managing their conditions and promote healthy lifestyles.
- Develop individualized diabetes care plans with measurable goals and outcomes.
- Travel to remote villages by small planes.
- Actively participate in performance improvement activities.
- Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Maintain confidentiality and professional as well as ethical standards of conduct at all times.
- Communicate the mission and vision of Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital (SSMH).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Education and training in food and/or nutrition services.
- Certified Diabetes Educator preferred.
- Three (3) years of recent relevant experience.
- Current Registered Dietician License (any state), Alaska Registered Dietician License required within six (6) months of permanent hire.
- Prefer certification as a Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES).
- Knowledge of nutrition in order to provide nutrition counseling to individuals and families.
- Strong clinical skills to collaborate in an effective manner with the healthcare team, community organizations, and families.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationship with co-workers, service providers, and patients with diverse opinions, values and religious and cultural ideals.
- Ability to assist in writing grant applications, work with statistics and make reports to outside federal or state agencies.
- Ability to work autonomously and be accountable.
- Good oral and written communication skills, mathematical skills, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Accurately complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Respond promptly to customer's needs.
- Calmly manage difficult or emotional situations.
- Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality.

- Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and efficiently with the public and to remain calm under stress.
- Knowledge of all confidentially requirements regarding patients and strict maintenance of proper confidentiality on all such information.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Access, E-mail, and internet.
