Salary Range: $20.76 - $34.26 Hourly / $43,180.80 - $71,260.80 Annually

FLSA Position Class: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Monday Friday, 7AM -3:30PM

Summary

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of motorized equipment and performing manual duties and preventative maintenance tasks within the water and sewer departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. • Operates vehicles and equipment such as a bush hog, backhoe, and other equipment.
• Operates vehicles and/or equipment to transport materials, tools, and personnel to sewer and water construction sites.
• Performs maintenance and repair of water and sewer mains, services, valves, manholes, and hydrants.
• Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials, and staff to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy.
• Installs sanitary sewer lines, lift stations, pumps, manholes, and all related facilities.
• Assists in excavations and backfill of utility trenches; makes connections for water, sewer, and drainage pipes.
• Receives requests for emergency and unscheduled work, coordinates the completion of tasks, and responds to complaints.
• Mows and trims grass, clears debris, and grades land around water and sewer lines.
• Inspects and makes repairs to the city's creek crossings every six months.
• Services and makes minor repairs to equipment on a regular basis.
• Prepares field notes and activity reports.
• Utilizes electronic locating equipment.
• Provides back-up assistance to other crews when needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education and/or Experience

• High School diploma or GED.
• One (1) year experience in operating heavy motorized vehicles and equipment.

Other Requirements

• Possession of a valid North Carolina CDL Class A license, or any valid CDL Class A license with ability to obtain a North Carolina CDL Class A license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
• Must maintain a residence within a 45-minute response time of the Municipal Operations Center within (six) 6 months of accepting position.

• Working knowledge of the practices of operating and servicing trucks and water/sewer line construction equipment.
• Working knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
• Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions to operate equipment.
• Working knowledge of excavation, trenching, and confined space entry procedures.
• Working knowledge of various chemicals used in water and sewer systems to maintain the systems property, efficiently, and safely.
• Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles, equipment, and tools in this department.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, directions, and traffic signals.
• Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
• Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the public.

Job Related Physical Requirements

This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and to convey detailed or important instructions to others; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Working Conditions

The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, snow, ice, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, gases, oils, dust, and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, uneven surfaces, and confined spaces. An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties, to face contact with potentially infectious materials. Employees may be required to work nights, weekends, or during emergency situations.
