Job Title: Oncology Med Surg Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Oncology Med Surg Duration: 17 weeks Shift: 12 Hours Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS (preferred), ONS (if doing chemotherapy) Must-Have: Minimum of 2 years of experience in specialty, no first-time travelers Description: Unit is focused on oncology patients. Travelers will work on a floor with 29 beds. Nurse-patient ratios are typically 1:5, with occasional 1:6. Nurse aides are generally available, with 3 on duty per day. Weekend requirement is every other weekend. Holidays will rotate with the staff. Scrub color is Caribbean Blue. There is telemonitoring available, but reading strips is not required. Floating to other areas is rare and usually only to medical acute. Floor specific orientation consists of 3 days. Common diagnoses include acute oncology symptoms, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, sickle cell crisis, hematology, medical overflow, oncology, and end of life care. Patients from the outpatient area may transfer to the floor to finish treatment if needed. Cancellation policy is 12 hours every 2 weeks. Charting is done using MEDITECH. A BSN is not required.
