Posting Date 05/25/2026 Closing Date 06/05/2026 Title DENTAL ASSISTANT 1 or 2 Employee Type Staff- Classified Department LSUNO Oral Surgery Job Summary / Basic Functions Under general supervision of the Dental Program Coordinator, this position will provide assistance to an Oral Surgeon, resident, or dental student during procedures. Responsibilities include seating and preparing patients for treatment, recording medical history, measuring pulse, respiration, blood pressure, ensuring patient comfort and support. The incumbent handles patients during treatment, sets up supplies, passes surgical instruments and materials, takes radiographs, provides patient education, gives post‑operative instructions, and cleans and disinfects treatment areas after procedures. This role interacts with faculty, residents, students, and patients on both skillful and professional levels, providing a necessary service of dental assistance. Other Information About the Position Assist oral surgeons and dental students with chair‑side treatment of patients. Maintain and stock cabinet. Instruct and evaluate students in proper four‑handed dentistry techniques. Chart patients according to LSUSD systems (Axium/WinOMS computer knowledge). Give follow‑up home instructions as directed by the surgeon, resident, or student. Implement and maintain infection control in the work area. Check inventory and order supplies when needed. Follow safety guidelines set forth by LSUHS Clinical School of Dentistry and OSHA. Know dental and surgical terminology. Know the correct nomenclature of all dental and surgical instruments. Be knowledgeable of computers. Minimum Qualifications Required Education: Other Years of Experience: 0 Experience for Dental Assistant 1: No experience required. Experience for Dental Assistant 2: One year of experience or training as a dental assistant or dental hygienist. Additional Information About This Position This is a Civil Service Position. Pre‑employment drug testing and criminal background check are required. Career Progression: This position is part of the career progression group and may be filled as Dental Assistant 1 or 2. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; work hours will be determined by department. Work Location: 1100 Florida Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119. Compensation: Special Entrance Rate of $15.05 per hour for Dental Assistant 2 and $14.06 for Dental Assistant 1. Additional $2.25 per hour for candidates with a current DANB certification, and/or $1.50 for EDDA.
