Position Information Position Number: PPS004 Vacancy Status: Open to all candidates Title: Police Officer Designation: EHRA Employment Type: Permanent – Full‑time Work Schedule: 12‑hour shifts, variable days with shift rotating every six months Hours per week: 40 FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt Division: Business Affairs Department: Safety & Security (Adm) Work Location: Police & Public Safety Salary Range: $55,750 – $64,465 Primary Purpose of Department The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University’s pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our law‑enforcement professionals strive to reduce crime, accidents and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships. Primary Purpose of Position This position performs law‑enforcement work on a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, officers enforce state and federal laws, ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited jurisdiction. Duties include patrolling an assigned area, responding to complaints or calls, detecting violations, apprehending violators, investigating complaints, collecting and preserving evidence, testifying in court, and other related tasks. Responsibilities Protect life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations. Conduct preliminary and follow‑up criminal investigations. Conduct detentions, interviews and arrests in accordance with the law and departmental directives. Communicate with others by vocal and written means; relay clear, intelligible messages through proper words and body language. Comply with all departmental directives and university policies; complete all assigned tasks and duties. Education and Experience Minimum Requirement: Graduation from high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency certificate. Must also hold a probationary certification from the NC CJETS/C as a commissioned police officer and successfully complete the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Preferred: Police Officer I: Entry‑level with 0–2 years of law‑enforcement experience; completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and meet certification requirements within one year. Police Officer II: Fully functioning officers with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal officer; completed NC Basic Training and hold at least a General Certification. Police Officer III: Veteran officers with a minimum of 4 years of experience as sworn officers; completed NC Basic Training and attained General Certification. Certifications and Licenses Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Valid state‑issued vehicle operator’s license. Special Notes This posting will be used to fill multiple positions as they become available. This position is eligible for a sign‑on bonus (current UNC Charlotte employees are not eligible).
