Senior Engineering Manager, Index Operational Tooling

It’s how we’ve contributed to supporting the financial stability and growth of communities and economies globally for more than 300 years.Key Functions:As a Senior Engineering Manager in Index Tooling, the individual will be responsible for leading globally distributed engineering teams delivering and operating business-critical technology platforms supporting index management and operational workflows.The role combines engineering leadership, technical and architectural oversight, delivery accountability and people development. The candidate will work closely with Product, Operations, Architecture and Technology partners to deliver strategic capabilities, design operational platforms and continuously improve engineering quality, resilience and effectiveness.Key Responsibilities:Hands-on engineering leader who builds and scales globally distributed teams, driving the development of resilient, high-performance platforms that enable the end-to-end index lifecycle while partnering with Product and Operations to deliver commercial outcomesOwns the end-to-end engineering delivery of scalable, resilient, secure and highly available technology solutions supporting index management and operational workflowsProvides technical and architectural direction for new capabilities, platform modernisation and complex engineering decisionsEnsures solutions are designed and delivered in line with agreed engineering standards for maintainability, scalability, security, performance and operational resilienceDrives the modernisation of legacy platforms and adoption of cloud-native architecture where this provides clear business and technology benefitEstablishes and continuously improves engineering practices covering software design, coding standards, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, security and automationEnsures appropriate testing and quality controls are embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycleGuides teams in the effective design and implementation of APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, data processing solutions and enterprise integrationsDrives the responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering, Generative AI, agentic AI and intelligent automation where these can improve engineering productivity, software quality, user experience or operational efficiencyPartners with Product Managers, Operations, Index Delivery & Management, Architecture, UX and other stakeholders to translate business priorities into pragmatic technology solutions and delivery plansBalances strategic transformation and new capability delivery with the reliability, support and continued evolution of existing business-critical platformsCommunicates technical strategy, delivery progress, risks and complex engineering decisions clearly and effectively to technical and non-technical audiencesBuilds a high-performing engineering culture centred on ownership, accountability, collaboration, engineering excellence and continuous improvementMentors and develops engineers, technical leads and engineering managers, strengthening technical capability, leadership depth and succession across the organisationExperience & Skills:15+ years of extensive proven experience in software engineering, including the design, development and operation of large-scale, business-critical applications in an enterprise environmentProven experience leading and developing engineering teams responsible for complex technology products and platformsStrong technical depth with the ability to provide credible architectural guidance and challenge engineering decisions constructivelyStrong Experience delivering modern web applications using Angular and/or React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS and related UI technologiesStrong experience with Java and the design and implementation of RESTful APIs, GraphQL and microservicesPractical understanding of AI-assisted software engineering and intelligent automation, including appropriate security, governance and control considerationsStrong understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure and native services, including RDS, EC2, EKS/ECS, Lambda, SQS, SNS, API Gateway and AWS GlueStrong understanding of API design, microservices, event-driven architecture and enterprise integration patternsExtensive experience with modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, observability and automationStrong understanding of software security, performance, scalability, resilience and production support considerationsStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex business and technical requirements into pragmatic solutionsExperience working in agile delivery environments with a focus on collaboration, automation and continuous improvementExperience working effectively across Product, Architecture, Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Delivery Management and Technology Governance functionsExperience within Financial Markets, ideally Equities, Fixed Income, Index Management or related financial services technology is advantageousFamiliarity with PostgreSQL is advantageousExperience with workflow orchestration or Business Process Management technologies such as IBM BAW or Camunda is
