ESL Teacher
Position: ESL Teacher Reports To: North Carolina Salary Scale + Local Supplement Status: Permanent/10months
Responsibilities:
- Teaches a full load of classes just like the mainstream teacher. He/she may have classes that are a combination of pull-out and push-in.
- Collaborates with teachers to check student progress, teach the ELDSCS as well as help student/mainstream teachers with strategies in building academic language in the content areas.
- Administers the group modules of the ACCESS assessment which is a state-mandated language proficiency test that covers a variety of grade spans each having a different level. It is a test in 4 parts Speaking (1-on-1 administered by a retired teacher), Listening, Reading and Writing by the ESL teacher.
- Translates or arranges for translation of notes or letters/interpretation at a conference, or make phone calls in an emergency.
- Fulfills the role of a cultural broker between- i. Mainstream teacher- ESL student ii. Mainstream teacher- parent iii. Administrator – ESL student iv. Administrator parent v. School personnel – ESL student vi. School personnel- ESL parent vii. EC Team – ESL student viii. EC team-parent
- Keeps up with reports that are required by the state and federal government at various points during the year. (Refer to ESL teacher task chart).
