Material/Process Inspector I-III – Coating & Traffic Materials Testings Position in the MTD Division (2601170) focusing on ensuring the quality, durability, and compliance of coatings, pavement markings, raised pavement markers, and reflective glass beads with required specifications and performance standards. Follow standard practices with minimal supervision. Maintain and calibrate testing equipment. Record, calculate, and convert test data into specific units of measurement. Secure, log, and prepare samples of raw or manufactured materials for testing. Drive/travel to laboratories, manufacturing plants, supply points, warehouses, and project sites for monitoring. Coordinate test results with engineers, inspectors, suppliers, and field construction personnel; assist in determining causes of material problems. Order equipment and supplies; maintain inventory of test supplies. Review plans and material specifications for changes in requirements. Prepare and maintain inspection or test reports, issuing material reports as needed. Observe tests, review reports from other inspectors, and perform quality assurance for tests and inspections. Maintain a diary of inspection or test details. Handle material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications – Level I High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies. No prior experience required; experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Attention to detail and ability to identify errors and problems. Ability to perform calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. Computer proficiency with applicable programs, applications, and systems. Maintains a safe and effective working relationship with others. Qualifications – Level II High School Graduate or equivalent. 1 year of experience in laboratory work, material inspection, or related engineering work. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license (state vehicle required). Knowledge of applicable testing methods, laboratory procedures, industry safety standards, and equipment operation and maintenance. Perform laboratory tests and calibrate equipment. Maintain a safe working relationship with others. Decision‑making based on logic and reasoning. Qualifications – Level III High School Graduate or equivalent. 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection, or related engineering work; related college education or technical training may substitute experience (1 year per year). Valid driver’s license (state vehicle required). Considerable knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance. Expertise in testing methods, lab procedures, industry safety standards, and equipment calibration. Attention to detail, ability to review information for errors, and ensure clarity. Proficiency with computers, applications, and systems. Training in classroom, office, or field environments. Use of applicable hand and power tools. Decision‑making based on logic and reasoning. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work in indoor and outdoor environments. Exposed to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour). Exposure to noise and hazards such as moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals. Required protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other device). Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Use of hand and power tools and other mechanical devices. Requires visual acuity for measurements and assembly or fabrication tasks. This job is identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. Random drug testing may occur.
