Remote Forensic Psychologist - SVP/MDO Evaluations

Position Consulting Psychologist – Forensics (Department of State Hospitals, Coalinga State Hospital) Salary: $11,904.00 – $14,290.00 per month (subject to minimum salary of classification or alternate range). Final filing date: 6/22/2026. Responsibilities Independently evaluate, review, and risk assess extensive case files and records of individuals committed to Coalinga State Hospital as sexually violent predators (SVP) or mentally disordered offenders (MDO). Write forensic evaluation reports to determine whether patients meet SVP or MDO statutory criteria for civil commitment. Provide court testimony and depositions, typically in the patient’s county of commitment. Travel to Coalinga on a regular basis for patient interviews and file reviews, and respond to subpoenas as required. Review evaluations written by other forensic department psychologists to ensure clinical and legal soundness, accuracy, and grammatical correctness. Respond to questions from non‑forensic departments regarding SVP/MDO laws, risk assessment, research, and evaluation matters. Maintain HIPAA, DSH, and DSH‑C confidentiality and regulatory requirements. Minimum Qualifications Doctorate in Clinical, Counseling, or Forensic Psychology. Specialized knowledge and experience in forensic report writing and court testimony. Experience in SVP/MDO laws and forensic evaluation. Eligibility for permanent civil service status or current state employee eligible for transfer, reinstatement, or SROA/Surplus status. Pass required drug screening, background investigation, and medical clearance. Desirable Qualifications At least five (5) years of MDO report‑writing experience. At least one (1) year of forensic evaluation experience. Leadership ability, empathy, objective judgment, observation skills, and scientific integrity. Willingness to travel frequently for field visits. Working Conditions Primarily a telecommuting position with travel to Coalinga once or twice monthly for file reviews and patient interviews; optional participation in weekly conference calls and occasional staff meetings/training at DSH‑Coalinga.
