Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description This phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen preparation while providing a calm, professional, and reassuring experience for patients across a wide demographic. The position requires strong technical skills in venipuncture and specimen handling, as well as meticulous attention to detail in labeling, documentation, and compliance with safety regulations. Responsibilities * Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring minimal discomfort and a positive experience for patients. * Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. * Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients before and during the process. * Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify accuracy of patient and test information. * Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity. * Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy. * Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to preserve specimen quality and integrity. * Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling. * Follow specific protocols for specimen handling and transport as required by different tests and procedures. * Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, infection control, and environmental standards. * Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment in accordance with safety and infection control requirements. * Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as needed to maintain a safe and compliant work area. * Update patient information and documentation accurately in systems or records as required. * Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner. * Attend and complete annual department trainings to maintain knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Essential Skills * 2-3 years of experience performing blood draws. * Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture using straight needles. * Demonstrated experience with blood draw procedures, specimen labeling, and specimen processing. * Ability to centrifuge specimens and handle specimen preparation in accordance with test requirements. * Strong administrative skills and attention to detail for accurate labeling, documentation, and record keeping. * Ability to fully understand and interpret physicians' orders and laboratory requisitions. * Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. * Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and colleagues. * Skill in answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results accurately. * Bilingual communication skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications * Experience with infant blood draws is a plus. * Experience drawing blood from pediatric patients is an advantage. * Experience with broader specimen processing beyond blood draws is beneficial. * Comfort with in-state travel and working in multiple locations is desirable. Work Environment This role follows a structured schedule of Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position involves in-state travel and is well-suited for individuals who enjoy working in different locations and experiencing a change of scenery. The work includes regular interaction with patients and healthcare professionals in clinical or laboratory settings, with strict adherence to safety protocols, including the use of appropriate attire and personal protective equipment. The environment emphasizes regulatory compliance, attention to detail, and consistent, high-quality patient care. The role does not include holiday or vacation work requirements as noted in the description. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newburgh, NY.
