CalWORKs/ISSP Counselor – Job Description Title: Counselor Working Title: CalWORKs/Immigration Student Success Program Counselor San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) seeks an experienced counselor to support students receiving CalWORKs benefits and immigrant-based students through academic counseling, case management, and community resource coordination. Primary Responsibilities Provide personal, academic, and career counseling to CalWORKs and ISSP participants. Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions, including assessment, advisement, and orientation. Lead program development, including planning, implementing, and evaluating strategies to improve student retention and completion. Develop and recommend student support services to enhance retention and success. Present data and research on student outcomes to stakeholders such as faculty, county welfare departments, and partner organizations. Provide training on CalWORKs welfare-to-work requirements, immigration resources, and cultural adaptation topics to district staff. Create Individual Training Plans (ITPs) and coordinate work-study placements to meet welfare-to-work compliance. Manage the ISSP Resource Center at Cesar Chavez Campus, including community-building activities and immigration referral services. Assist in setting future goals and strategies to improve equity and achievement for participants and other underrepresented student groups. Collaborate with counseling, county welfare, and community partners to identify service gaps, develop strategies, and collect evidence of progress. Organize equity-focused campus events engaging the college community and addressing participants’ needs. Connect students with comprehensive support services, such as transportation, textbooks, exam fees, childcare resources, and transfer opportunities. Offer specialized support to ISSP sub-groups including undocumented students, immigrant professionals, LGBTQIA+ students, and English learners. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or a related field; OR the equivalent. Relevant experience in a post‑secondary educational setting working with CalWORKs or ISSP populations. Demonstrated knowledge of welfare-to-work requirements and immigration issues affecting students. Strong communication and presentation skills. Pay and Benefits Salary Range: Class 1, Step C – Class 6, Step C ($6,933.44–$8,849.03) per month, based on the current AFT – College Faculty Salary Schedule. Initial placement is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience. Salary is non‑negotiable. The position is FLSA exempt and does not accrue overtime. Benefits include employer‑paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, vacation, and opportunities for professional development as outlined in the AFT – Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Additional travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one‑way, may be paid according to district policy.
