JOB DESCRIPTIONPOSITION: Adjunct Instructor of PsychologyDIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Social Sciences | School of Education and Social SciencesFLSA STATUS: Part-Time, Non-ExemptREPORTS TO: Chair, Social Sciences DivisionThe Adjunct Instructor of Psychology is a part-time faculty position employed for a specific assignment and specified academic term. The Adjunct Instructor of Psychology shall have the primary responsibility of supporting the Social Sciences Division by maximizing its operating performance while achieving institutional goals and objectives. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality instruction aligned with departmental learning outcomes, support student success, and help students connect psychological theory to research, professional practice, and the diverse communities FMU serves. Adjunct appointments are made each term based on enrollment and curricular need and carry no expectation of continued employment beyond the contracted term.Essential FunctionsTeach assigned undergraduate Psychology courses, which may include General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, Theories of Personality, Cognitive Psychology, Physiological/Biological Psychology, Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, Research Methods in Psychology, and other courses within the candidate’s area of qualification.Prepare and deliver instruction using the departmentally approved syllabus, course objectives, and student learning outcomes.Employ effective and inclusive pedagogical methods appropriate to the assigned modality, including in-person, hybrid, and online delivery.Use the University’s learning management system to post the syllabus and course materials, communicate with students, and record grades in a timely manner.Maintain accurate attendance and academic records; submit midterm grades, final grades, and all required documentation by University deadlines.Hold scheduled availability (in person or virtual) for student consultation, proportionate to the teaching assignment.Monitor student progress and participate in early-alert, advising support, and retention initiatives consistent with the University’s mission.Refer students in distress to Counseling Services, Academic Support, and other campus resources in accordance with University policy, and maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students.Supervise in-class activities, laboratory exercises, or research demonstrations safely and ethically, ensuring compliance with IRB requirements for any student research involving human participants.Contribute course-level assessment data, artifacts, and reports needed for program review, assessment, and SACSCOC accreditation.Adhere to the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, FERPA, Title IX, and all applicable University policies and procedures.Attend adjunct orientation, required trainings, and departmental meetings as scheduled.Perform other instructional duties as assigned by the Chair of Social Sciences or the Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences.The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to handle information of a sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.Effective analytical and decision-making skills.Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.Minimum RequirementsMaster’s degree in Psychology from a regionally accredited institution; OR a master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Psychology, consistent with SACSCOC faculty credentialing requirements.Demonstrated content mastery in the subject area(s) to be taught.Availability to teach during assigned course times, which may include evenings, weekends, or accelerated terms.Preferred RequirementsPh.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.Prior college or university teaching experience, particularly at an HBCU or minority-serving institution.Specialization in clinical, counseling, developmental, social, cognitive, industrial-organizational, or experimental psychology.Ability to teach Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences or Research Methods, including proficiency with SPSS, R, or comparable statistical software.Current Florida licensure or certification (e.g., Licensed Psychologist, LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, BCBA) for candidates teaching applied or practice-oriented courses.Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) and with online or hybrid course design.Experience mentoring undergraduate research or supervising senior capstone projects.Ability to teach interdisciplinary courses that complement programs in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Education, or Biology and pre-health pathways.Experience with curriculum development, program assessment, or accreditation processes.Record of professional development, conference participation, or scholarly activity.Pre-Employment RequirementsCriminal background checkFlorida Memorial University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
