Position Overview

Our client, a growing transportation and logistics company based in the Kansas City area, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Transportation Compliance & Safety Specialist to join their team. This individual will play a critical leadership role in overseeing Owner Operator recruitment, driver onboarding, safety, compliance, and driver qualification management while helping build a culture centered around professionalism, accountability, and operational excellence.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to build something from the ground up, you'll be creating processes and SOPs from scratch, with a strong likelihood of building out and leading a team as the company grows over the next few years.

This position requires someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates effectively with drivers and leadership, and understands the importance of balancing safety, compliance, customer service, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1. Oversee all aspects of transportation safety and compliance
2. Manage and maintain compliance with:
3. • FMCSA regulations
   • DOT requirements
   • Hours of Service (HOS)
   • Driver Qualification Files (DQFs)
   • Drug & Alcohol Consortium requirements
   • Vehicle maintenance compliance
4. Lead Owner Operator recruitment efforts
5. Coordinate and manage:
6. • Driver onboarding
   • Orientation
   • Background checks
   • Clearinghouse requirements
   • MVR reviews
   • Safety training
7. Ensure all drivers and contractors are properly qualified prior to dispatch
8. Monitor CSA scores, safety events, and compliance trends
9. Conduct accident and incident investigations and implement corrective actions
10. Develop and improve onboarding workflows, SOPs, and safety processes
11. Work closely with dispatch and operations teams to ensure compliance standards are maintained
12. Assist with audits, documentation, and record retention
13. Build positive relationships with drivers while maintaining accountability and company standards
14. Help create a proactive safety culture focused on continuous improvement

Qualifications

1. Minimum 2-5 years of experience in transportation safety, compliance, or fleet management
2. Strong understanding of FMCSA and DOT regulations
3. Experience with Owner Operator onboarding and qualification processes
4. Knowledge of transportation management systems (TMS) and compliance platforms preferred
5. Strong organizational and communication skills
6. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
7. High attention to detail and problem-solving ability
8. Experience in logistics, trucking, brokerage, or asset-based transportation operations preferred

Preferred Experience

1. Knowledge of CSA management and DOT audit preparation
2. Experience working with both company drivers and Owner Operators
