Responsibilities Analyzing utility filings. Conducting legal research. Drafting legal memoranda, briefs, and other legal documents. Presenting matters for consideration by the full Commission in Open Meetings. Independently managing assigned caseload. A senior attorney for the Mississippi Public Service Commission performs legal work related to public utility regulation under the supervision of the general counsel. The senior attorney assists in. He/she may be assigned to serve as hearing examiner in any case filed before the Commission, including complex, contested matters and investigations. As hearing examiner, the senior attorney must regulate the course of the proceedings, manage the evidentiary record, and draft recommended orders, including findings of fact and conclusions of law, for the Commission’s consideration. The position requires mastery of complex utility regulatory law, including electric, gas, water, sewer, and telecommunications utilities. This knowledge must be possessed at the time of employment or be acquired within a reasonable time period after employment. The senior attorney is expected to be impartial, objective, and free from political influence and demonstrate a sense of responsibility and commitment to public trust. Maintaining high standards of integrity and showing respect for others are essential to the job. Experience/Educational Requirements Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school Active Mississippi bar membership A strong ability to synthesize complex data into clear legal arguments and communicate technical issues to non-legal audiences, both verbally and in writing.
