Position Summary


The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides patient care in an ambulatory setting with kindness and compassion under the direction of the physician or other designated licensed staff. The position works as part of a team with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and students in the health professions. The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) reports to the Office Manager, Health Services.

Note that this position requires Tuberculosis screening as well as proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis through lab confirmation of immunity, documented evidence of vaccination, or a doctor's diagnosis of disease.

Essential Duties


Description of Job Duties

• Coordinates patient care as directed by physicians, NP or PA and according to UIW and UIWSOM standards and policies.
• Ensures patient HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality is maintained at all times and treats patients, and team with courtesy, kindness, compassion, and respect.
• Contacts parents with patient permission and administration of UIW as directed by provider.
• Practices standard infection control precautions.
• Maintains quality control standards.
• Performs all duties within the scope of a Medical Assistant's standards of practice. Operates diagnostic equipment, performs and interprets CLIA waived tests, removes staples from superficial wounds, changes wound dressing, obtains cultures, urine samples, administers non intravenous medication; performs simple specimen collection via noninvasive techniques and collects blood specimens via venipuncture or via capillary, records results, and does quality control checks on equipment.
• Sets up logs for lab, immunization refrigerator, immunizations, and returns calls to patients on lab work after reviewed with physician or provider.
• Prepares and handles all specimens; communicates with Quest Labs, as appropriate.
• Organizes exam and treatment rooms; stocks and cleans rooms and sterilizes instruments.
• Provides telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and gathering of information without requiring the exercise of judgment based on clinical knowledge.
• Rooms patients according to policy and procedures, prepares patient for examination.
• Records patient care documentation written or in the EMR accurately and in a timely manner.
• Supports and follows criteria for reading TB tests in accordance with guidelines from CDC with oversight of provider.
• Participates in COVID-19 community education and outreach.
• Provides wellness checks on students in isolation or quarantine.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strong skills in use of EMR, scheduling, notes, and billing.
• Ability to verify insurance, schedule and room patients.
• Computer literacy and use of MS Office, Excel and Outlook email.
• Ability to meet compliance with Tuberculosis screening as well as proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis through lab confirmation of immunity, documented evidence of vaccination, or a doctor's diagnosis of disease.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
• Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education


High school graduate or GED equivalent.

Required Work Experience


One (1) year of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in primary care with Women's Health.

Preferred Qualifications

• Some college education.
• Three (3) years of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in primary care with Women's Health.
• Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

• Current nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification.
• Current BLS certification or the ability to obtain the certification within 30 days of employment.

Work Hours


Typical Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift up to 15 pounds of medical equipment and/or supplies.
• Fine motor skills for the appropriate handling of medical equipment and supplies.
• Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat to retrieve clinic equipment/materials.
• Ability to push/pull medical carts/wagons used in special events holding up to 30lbs.
• Ability to regularly move about clinic and event venues to actively assess and engage patients.
