Special Education Assistant

Position Title Special Education Assistant Location Carpenter Elementary School (In‑Person) FTE 1.0 Salary AAEA/P Salary Schedule Reporting Relationship Classroom Teacher/Building Principal Qualifications – Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following: Associate's or Bachelor's degree. 60 credit hours from an approved postsecondary institution, or CDA certificate with the ability to complete additional 30 hours. Passing score on one of the following state‑approved academic assessments: Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) ETS ParaPro Assessment Must be able to perform academic work at the K‑8 or secondary level. Experience working with school‑aged children. Job Responsibilities Support students with documented medical needs in the lunchroom and other school settings. Assist students with bus arrival and departure. Collaborate with teachers and other support staff. Assist students with self‑care needs, including personal hygiene and toileting. Maintain accurate records monitoring student health and progress. Monitor activities to ensure safety of students, classmates and other staff. Accompany students on field trips. Be willing to receive training in seizure protocol, administering medications, diabetic/​asthma/allergy care, and other areas as needed. Assist students with classroom activities and assignments as requested by the teacher. Escort children to and from various rooms. Ensure regular and reliable attendance. Other duties as assigned. Skills Language: Read, write, and comprehend basic instructions, short correspondence, and memos; present information in one‑on‑one and small‑group settings; communicate clearly orally and in writing. Mathematical: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Other: Work with parents and children of diverse cultural backgrounds; develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community; perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board policies. Physical Demands The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, bend, and twist. Occasionally must push or lift up to 50 lb. Requires close vision and ability to interact with the public and staff. The position requires meeting multiple demands from several people and interacting with the public while maintaining safety and well‑being of students. Work Environment Moderate to loud noise levels. Frequently required to interact with the public and staff, with direct responsibility for the safety and well‑being of students.
