Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Unit - Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active State License Certifications: BLS, ACLS recommended Must-Have: EKG interpretation, medication titration; RN licensure, BLS, EKG interpretation, basic nursing skills Description: Unit has 70 beds. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common diagnoses include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pacemaker/AICD placement, and various lung surgeries. The unit manages chest tubes and esophagectomies but does not accept fresh post-anesthesia care unit patients. Experience in EKG interpretation and medication titration is necessary. RNs are required to titrate drips, primarily Cardizem and heparin. There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who rarely takes patients alongside a house supervisor. Patient Care Technicians are available, with ratios of 1:8-9 during the day, 1:9-10 during the evening, and 1:10-12 at night. RNs will interact with CPAP and BiPAP devices if they are part of the patient's home regimen. Heated high flow is used in special circumstances with specific patients. The unit employs monitor techs, and RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry strips using Philips monitors. Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours, from 0700 to 1930 and 1900 to 0730. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend. Holiday rotation is mandatory, covering major holidays. Currently, there is no call or standby requirement. RNs may float to other general medical units as needed. Scrubs can be of any color, provided they are not children’s or cartoon prints. Unit-specific orientation typically lasts for one shift or part of one, depending on prior experience.
