Job Description The Birth Center Nurse Manager works in collaboration with the Director and two other Nurse Manager colleagues. Together the leadership team is accountable for managing the quality, safety, cost-effectiveness, and consistency of patient care for the entire Birth Center. This includes OBED, Antepartum, Labor, OR, and Postpartum areas. Additionally, it serves as a resource to staff, physicians, residents, students, and others in this academic environment. Job Description The Birth Center Nurse Manager works in collaboration with the Director and two other Nurse Manager colleagues. Together the leadership team is accountable for managing the quality, safety, cost-effectiveness, and consistency of patient care for the entire Birth Center. This includes OBED, Antepartum, Labor, OR, and Postpartum areas. Additionally, it serves as a resource to staff, physicians, residents, students, and others in this academic environment. The Nurse Manager will have responsibility over RNs, clinical staff, technicians, and Patient Care Assistants (PCA). Promotes an environment of teamwork and innovation for a shared voice in nursing practice while supporting an exchange of ideas to continually improve evidence–based practices and refine patient care outcomes. The duties of the Birth Center Nurse Manager include staff selection, human resource management, developing performance improvement goals, addressing educational needs, and staff recognition. The Birth Center Nurse Manager displays effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving to achieve mutually established goals successfully. They will continuously monitor patient care and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and refine methods to improve quality and patient safety consistent with National Patient Safety Goals, JCAHO, and infection control standards. The incumbent will develop and enhance systems to ensure critical instrumentation and equipment is readily available for the unit and OR. The Birth Center Nurse Manager is responsible for proactively carrying out the mission, vision, and values of UCSF Medical Center. The Mission Bay Birth Center is a high-risk tertiary care unit. We have 9 OBED bays, 12 Antepartum Rooms, 9 LDRP rooms, 3 Operating rooms, and 24 Postpartum rooms with an annual operating budget of $175 million. Working alongside these following teams: Fetal Treatment Center, Pre-diagnostic Center, Oncology, and Cardiology to provide our community with optimal and collaborative care. Our high-risk patients are cared for and receive treatments in the following programs: MAPS, IUT, IUERT, and RAFT procedures. The Birth Center currently averages 220 births a month. This position reports directly to the Unit Director of the Birth Center under Women’s Health and Adult Services. The mission of the UCSF Department of OBGYN & Reproductive Sciences is to improve the lives and health of all women through excellence, innovation, and leadership in Patient Care, Scientific Discovery, Education, and Advocacy. “Leading the way in women’s health.” The Women’s Health Service Line at UCSF Medical Center is engaged in clinical research and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion, and Mission Bay facilities and satellite locations throughout the Bay Area. Involved in ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in assigned nursing unit(s) or area(s). Promotes environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students and others. Qualifications Required qualifications: Minimum of five (5) years of RN experience in high risk Labor and Deliver. A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services. Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills. Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making. Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments Preferred Qualifications Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal‑oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives. Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred. Certification in relevant area preferred. Current NRP Certificate Licenses/Certifications/Education Bachelors Degree in Nursing required. Registered Nurse in the State of California.
