Principal Psychiatrist (DMHAS) (Office/On-Site)

Principal Psychiatrist The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking dedicated and compassionate Principal Psychiatrists to provide clinical and supervisory services across multiple facilities in the state. Positions may be full-time or part-time with flexible shifts and may include hazardous duty. Compensation & Benefits Base annual salary (varies by location). Recruitment incentive up to $30,000. Annual bonus: $3,000 for board‑certified physicians; additional $5,000 for those with a secondary board (e.g., forensic, addiction). Volunteer on‑call and weekend coverage reimbursement. 16 hours/month of paid Continuing Medical Education or Professional Development / Maintenance of Certification. Standard benefits for state employees, with variations for part‑time roles. Responsibilities Provide 24‑hour supervision and on‑call coverage as scheduled. Make rounds and oversee multidisciplinary treatment teams. Coordinate medical staff work with related programs. Review treatment plans, clinical records, diagnoses, and discharge plans for policy and accreditation compliance. Offer education and training (grand rounds, case conferences). Assign, supervise, and evaluate staff and on‑site night duty physicians and psychiatrists. Contribute to meetings on clinical and administrative policy, research, program development, and treatment techniques. Assess, examine, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate treatments for patients with psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse disorders. Conduct advanced level risk assessments and consult on complex cases. Develop and implement quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. Prepare and review medical records, reports, and correspondence. Perform utilization review and management functions. Attend court hearings as a state witness. Perform any related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Extensive knowledge of behavioral health medicine and current psychiatry and substance abuse treatment methods. Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to evaluate, diagnose, prescribe, and conduct psychotherapy and other treatments. Capability to foster collaborative practice environments with other psychiatrists, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency in analyzing laboratory, imaging, and psychological reports. Administrative and supervisory abilities. Minimum Qualifications Board certification in psychiatry (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology) or in Adult or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. License to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut (temporary license up to one year permitted). Eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. 1320a‑7b(f). Possession of additional specialty certifications (geriatrics, ABI/TBI, forensics, substance abuse, etc.) may be required. License, certification, or permits as required by the specific position. Knowledge of and ability to work with bilingual patients may be required. Patients include those under the Psychiatric Security Review Board.
