Job Description and Duties

California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the Actuarial Office (ACTO) is seeking to fill a Senior Actuary or Actuary position in the Valuation Services 3. Under the direction of the Actuary Supervisor, the Actuary will perform actuarial duties and assignments in the Valuation Services Unit within the Actuarial Office of the California Public Retirement System. Possession of an Associateship or Fellowship with the Society of Actuaries is required.

Telework Information: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite per week.

Sponsorship

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship. CalPERS does not participate in E-Verify for employment authorization purposes.

Statement of Qualifications

Applicants must submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) that includes responses to the following questions. The SOQ is titled “Statement of Qualifications” and responses must be numbered and list all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. The SOQ must not exceed two pages in length.

  • Please describe your knowledge, skills, and abilities that make you an ideal candidate for this position.
  • Describe your experience with performing or reviewing experience study results.
  • Describe your experience with performing or reviewing benefit enhancements or proposed legislative changes.

Minimum Qualifications

All experience and education relating to the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) listed on the Classification Specification should be included in your application package. If using education to meet MQs, submit transcripts. If your degree is from outside the United States, submit a degree evaluation. Applicants may need to pass an examination to establish list eligibility prior to a final offer of employment.

Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list or LEAP eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility (please attach your letter, if available). SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority; therefore, individuals with other eligibility may be considered in the event no SROA or Surplus candidates apply. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered.
