Food Regulatory Specialist I Agency: N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division: Food & Drug Protection Division – Agriculture Consumer Service Position Number: 60011980 Grade: NC07 Description This position is located in the Food & Drug Protection Division, which comprises five functioning sections—Food, Dairy, Feed, Drug, and Administrative Services—and supports six laboratory branches: Feed, Fertilizer, Food, Microbiology, Residue, and Pesticide Formulations. The Division protects the health, welfare, and economic interests of consumers by ensuring that foods, drugs, livestock feeds, fertilizers, and medical devices are wholesome and properly labeled through thorough inspections and analysis. Work Territory Within the following counties: Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Swain, and Transylvania. Responsibilities Inspect and enforce regulations related to the manufacture, transport, storage, and sale of foods, drugs, livestock feeds, fertilizers, and medical devices. Ensure facilities meet safety, sanitary, and labeling standards, and identify properly labeled products for consumers. Conduct thorough inspections and analysis to protect consumer health and economic interests. Provide analytical support to the Food & Feed sections via the six laboratory branches. Travel overnight throughout the state as required, especially during initial training, and perform occasional after‑hours work during emergencies. Candidate Must Reside within a county in the territory or in NC within 20 miles (or 30 minutes) of any listed county. Relocate at own expense to one of the counties within the territory within four months of employment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Learn, apply, and explain State or Federal laws or regulations related to food manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale. Understand how equipment is used in food production, processing, storing, and sale. Apply principles of food sanitation. Possess good oral and written communication skills. Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology, food science, home economics, or a related field from an accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
