Surgical Clinical Veterinarian

Surgical Clinical Veterinarian – Northwestern University – Chicago, Illinois The Surgical Clinical Veterinarian will provide surgical, anesthesia, and clinical care services for large laboratory animal species (pigs, dogs, sheep, rabbits) and support the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) and the Querrey–Simpson Institute for Regenerative Engineering (RENU). This role emphasizes surgical proficiency, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with researchers to advance biomedical research. Responsibilities Perform surgeries, anesthesia, postoperative care, and gross necropsy evaluations on large laboratory animals. Conduct imaging and diagnostic procedures, including radiography and fluoroscopy. Implement clinical evaluation and management programs for experimental animals and perform clinical examinations of incoming and colony animals. Assist in the development of IACUC protocols, SOPs, policies, and guidelines. Deliver training, lectures, and presentations to CCM staff, students, and investigators on animal care, use, and welfare. Participate in the rotating on‑call schedule for veterinary emergencies (weekends, holidays, and off‑hours). Occasionally travel between Chicago and Evanston campuses. Maintain current IACUC protocols, medical and research records, and compliance documentation. Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of CCM and RENU. Qualifications & Competencies Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an AVMA‑accredited college or successful completion of the Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates program. Valid veterinary license in at least one U.S. state. Excellent surgical skills with knowledge of suture handling and aseptic technique. Proficient anesthesia monitoring and pre‑, peri‑, and post‑operative care for large animals. Strong understanding of U.S. laboratory animal regulations. Good communication and teamwork abilities. Preferred Qualifications & Skills Two years of formal surgical postdoctoral training or one year of surgical postdoctoral training plus one year of private‑practice experience. Cardiovascular or abdominal (laparotomy) surgical experience, including transplantation models. Familiarity with large animal IACUC protocols.
