Provider Role and Responsibilities: Clinical Expertise and Compassionate Care
The provider position demands a thorough understanding of clinical wound management, paired with a compassionate approach to patient care. Providers are expected to skillfully assess and evaluate complex wound conditions, utilizing evidence-based practices to guide their interventions. Adapting care plans to suit the unique clinical needs of each patient is essential for optimal healing and recovery. Effective communication and meticulous attention to detail are critical, given the provider's role in coordinating care across interdisciplinary teams to ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality, patient-centered services.

Providers are responsible for upholding a high standard of evidence-based clinical practice and compassionate care. This includes remaining current with the latest advances in wound care management, complying with regulatory and institutional guidelines, and actively participating in ongoing quality improvement initiatives. Collaboration and open communication with both healthcare professionals and patients are vital for achieving the best possible outcomes.
Patient Education and Collaboration
Providers educate patients and families on wound care and infection prevention, collaborate with healthcare teams to develop care plans, and document patient progress. They may also write orders, provide specialized wound care, and support complex surgical procedures as needed.
Operational Leadership and Team Collaboration
This role plays a significant part in promoting and communicating operational, quality, and safety goals, standards, initiatives, and improvements within the department. Providers are tasked with identifying barriers to achieving these goals at the unit level of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Wound Care Centers and are expected to communicate these issues to leadership, seeking assistance as needed. Partnerships with nursing leadership and collaboration with other relevant leaders are essential components of the role.

Core Duties
- Patient Assessment and Monitoring: Evaluate and monitor wounds of several types, including chronic, acute, surgical, and pressure ulcers.
- Treatment and Care Plan Management: Clean and dress wounds, perform debridement, and write orders to promote healing and prevent skin breakdown. Develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Patient and Family Education: Provide comprehensive education to patients and caregivers regarding wound care protocols, infection prevention strategies, and overarching healthcare objectives.
- Collaboration: Work alongside physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members to develop and execute care plans.
- Documentation: Keep patient records updated and complete for reimbursement.
- Resource for Staff: Serve as a source of expertise in wound management, including guidance on appropriate dressing selection and therapies.
- Attend relevant education, safety, and compliance meetings.
- Identify systemic health and social determinants that interfere with healing and work with other care providers to resolve these issues to aid in wound healing.
Training and/or Experience Required
- Requirements: MD or DO, Board Eligible or Certified (US Medical Specialty); Hyperbaric Medicine experience preferred.
- NC Medical License
