AWS Cloud Engineer
Location: Hybrid in Boston, MA
Job Type: Contract (W2/1099/C2C)
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and optimize multi-region AWS architectures ensuring scalability, high availability, and resilience.
- Build and manage advanced VPC networking including VPC peering, Transit Gateway (TGW), routing policies, and cross-region connectivity.
- Configure and maintain networking components: Security Groups, Network ACLs (NACLs), Route Tables, Internet Gateways (IGW) & NAT Gateways.
- Ensure High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies across regions.
- Set up and manage hybrid connectivity (VPN, Direct Connect).
- Perform UNIX/Linux system administration, including: Server provisioning, patching, performance tuning, shell scripting, and system-level troubleshooting.
- Support and administer database environments in cloud and hybrid setups.
- Handle database administration tasks including installation, configuration, upgrades, and patching, backup & recovery, performance tuning, and monitoring.
- Collaborate with DevOps and application teams for secure deployments.
- Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for infrastructure.
- Optimize environments for cost, performance, and governance.
Required Skills & Experience
Core Experience
- 10+ years of experience as a Cloud Engineer / DevOps Engineer / AWS Infrastructure Engineer.
- Strong experience working in enterprise-scale cloud environments.
Technical Skills
AWS & Networking
- Strong expertise in: VPC, Transit Gateway (TGW), Route 53, VPN, Direct Connect, Security Groups & NACLs.
- Experience designing multi-region HA/DR architectures.
Compute, Containers & Data
- Hands-on experience with: EC2, ECS (Fargate & EC2 launch types), Amazon Redshift.
UNIX / Linux
- Strong hands-on experience in: Linux/UNIX administration (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.), shell scripting (Bash) and system automation, performance tuning, and system troubleshooting.
Database & DBA Skills
- Solid experience with database administration (DBA) in cloud/on-prem environments: RDBMS such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server, database installation, configuration, and upgrades, backup & recovery strategies, performance tuning, and query optimization.
- Familiarity with AWS database services (RDS, Aurora, Redshift) and migrations.
Infrastructure as Code & Automation
- Strong experience with: Terraform / CloudFormation, scripting using Python or Bash.
DevOps & CI/CD
- Experience setting up and managing CI/CD pipelines.
Monitoring & Observability
- Experience with: CloudWatch, OpenSearch, Grafana / Prometheus, Datadog.
Additional Skills
- Knowledge of cloud cost optimization and tagging strategies.
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
Nice to Have
- AWS certifications (Solutions Architect / Advanced Networking).
- Experience with containerized and microservices architectures.
- Knowledge of cloud security and compliance frameworks.
