Reporter, Climate Change

$62.1k
Full-time
New Hampshire Public Radio is looking for an innovative, curious, and thoughtful journalist to cover climate change and the environment with a focus on how people are responding to it. This reporter will help lead our newsroom’s climate change reporting project, By Degrees. Through daily news coverage and audio and digital features, this reporter will bring our audience directly to the people and places experiencing climate change in New Hampshire. We’re looking for someone who can dig into the forces that are both limiting and driving mitigation and adaptation, and explain complex science in straightforward terms. We want someone who’s eager to call up the experts, while putting the everyday person at the center of their stories: a reporter as comfortable covering a meeting of the Public Utilities Commission as they are reporting mid-stream in a pair of waders. This beat also focuses on how people in positions of power are responding to our warmer, wetter state. This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid-eligible role based in our newsroom in Concord, reporting to a senior editor. This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit. The role will be classified as either a Reporter (with a minimum salary of $62,100) or a Senior Reporter (with a minimum salary of $69,300), depending on the chosen applicant's experience level. We also consider internal equity, among other factors, when deciding compensation.

Essential Duties Include: • Gather, write and produce news reports for on-air broadcast and digital distribution. • Use initiative and source development to develop both daily news and enterprise reporting. • Participate in newsroom-wide projects, including multi-part series and digital products, with a focus on journalism and storytelling that engages a new, diverse audience. • Work varied shifts to meet news coverage demands, including breaking news and other appropriate coverage reasons. • Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities.

Other Responsibilities Include: • Engage with communities around the state to deepen understanding of their beat and help meet the information needs of local residents. • Utilize social media to disseminate news to the NHPR audience and beyond. • Seek professional development opportunities, with support of managers, and take initiative to learn new skills in reporting, on-air presentation and digital news production.

Qualifications: We believe a strong newsroom includes journalists from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences and passions. If you don’t meet every qualification we’ve outlined but are intrigued by this position, we’d still love to hear from you. Please apply and tell us more about yourself. •4+ years of reporting experience in broadcast, print or digital journalism. • Excellent writing and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines. • Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and in developing stories. • Demonstrated success building trust with sources to produce original news coverage. • Ability to develop creative approaches to human interest coverage and feature stories. • Passion and intuition for audio journalism, a keen eye and ear for media trends and audience needs. • Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing data visualizations, video or other digital media, as well as audio. • Ability to represent NHPR standards and code of ethics in the course of interviewing, reporting and use of social media. • B.A. or relevant experience. However, we know there are great candidates who may not have all these qualities or who have important skills we may not have outlined above. If this is you, do not hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

Benefits: NHPR offers a generous benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance;  company paid short- and long-term disability; flexible spending accounts; 403(b) savings plan with company match and a free on-site fitness center. Three weeks of vacation, twelve paid holidays, two floating personal days, and paid sick and parental leave.

Things to Know About Us: NHPR is New Hampshire's independent and trusted source for news and information and the state's largest radio news service. Based in Concord, the state's capital and political hub, we are focused on producing accountability journalism and engaging deeply with the diverse communities and people of the Granite State. We’ve been serving audiences in New Hampshire and beyond for 40 years and counting. In that time, NHPR has  repeatedly earned national recognition for our journalism, including recent accolades from the Pulitzer Prizes, the Edward R. Murrow Awards, the Public Media Journalists Association and more. We seek people who are approachable, collaborative, empathetic, optimistic, and solution-minded. Together, we are building a culture based on earned trust, transparency, equity, and inclusion. We hold ourselves accountable for our organizational goals and our values. NHPR is intent on being public radio for all of New Hampshire, by expanding our audience, advancing our mission and vision, and deepening our engagement with diverse people and communities across the state and beyond our borders. Learn more about NHPR.

To Apply: Please apply on the job opportunities page of our website, NHPR.org, or through this link: When applying, please submit a cover letter and resume. NHPR is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. We do not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics.
