Director, Carey IT and Software Services (Carey Business School)

Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is hiring a Director, Carey IT and Software Services who will lead the school’sSaaS portfolio strategy, manage overall solutions architectureacross systems supporting the school’s prospect-to-alumnilifecycle, and oversee a hybrid IT delivery model with central IT. We are seeking a forward-looking IT leader who can anticipatechanging needs of the business and employ agile technology problemsolving, in close cooperation with IT partners at the university. This role will manage a small team of IT professionals includinglocal campus support services.

The Director, Carey IT and Software Services works closely withsenior IT, business, clinical, and/or academic leadership todevelop and implement strategic plans that support the overallgoals of the division. Directs the IT strategy, infrastructure,development, and support within the division. Develops policies andpractices to support divisional strategy. Leads complex projectsrequiring multi-disciplinary coordination and significant vendorcollaboration. Has day-to-day responsibility for a variety ofapplications and technologies that support a wide and diversecustomer base. Recognized as an expert in the major IT function(s)in the realm of responsibility, or as an expert in the applicationof technological solutions and strategies to meet the unique needsof the division. Participates in the development of white papersand strategic statements related to technology in support of thedivision. Incumbents may be required to represent the divisionwhile working with external constituencies in the development ofpolicies and practices that have an impact on the business of thedivision. Incumbents may be required to represent senior IT ordivisional leadership in executive meetings within and outside thedivision.

Central

Typically has responsibility or significant input into a million-plus dollar budget including both capital and operating expenses. Technology and business decisions are complex, have a high impact, and must take into account the various bases of products and services supported externally, as well as the unique business needs of the division, to ensure appropriate integration. Typically has responsibility for a moderate to large-size staffcomprised of direct and indirect reports of managers and staff.

Division

Responsible for the entire IT budget for the division, typicallymulti-million including both capital and operating expenses. Technology and business decisions made within the division arecomplex, have a high impact, and must take into account the variousbase of products and services supported externally, as well as theunique business needs of the division, to ensure appropriateintegration. Typically has responsibility for a moderate to largesize staff comprised of direct and indirect reports of managers and staff.

Throughout this job description, “division” refers to theboundaries of responsibility defined by this scope.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

• As a member of a senior management team, contribute or leadstrategic and tactical planning to achieve divisional goals by prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future technologies.
• Develop technology solutions to anticipate the division’sneeds, be cost-effective, reliable, and compatible with existingand emerging technologies.
• Anticipate change and be agile to respond as technologyrequirements emerge and evolve.
• Based on understanding of divisional goals, mission, andculture, assess the impact and effectiveness of technology toensure it supports the division’s needs.
• Provide input to, and have responsibility for, ongoingoperations, budgets, multi-year budget forecasts and both strategicand operational planning.
• Balance available personnel and funding resources in support ofmeeting both operational and strategic imperatives. Recognizesituations that present themselves and act with leadership toaddress significant issues.
• Work with constituents in conjunction with other IT leaders tointerpret customer business needs and make recommendations forstrategic investments in technology, applications, businessprocesses, personnel, etc. that meet the goals of thedivision.
• Lead the development of technology-related policies andprocedures for the division.
• Ensure that applicable Hopkins policies, practices, andregulatory requirements are addressed and followed within the areaof responsibility.

Relationship Management

• Represent senior IT or divisional leadership, often withdelegated authority, in meetings both within and outside ofHopkins.
• Manage the customer relationship and satisfaction, andadherence to service level agreements.
• Create and promote a culture of excellent customerservice.
• Facilitate and influence division-wide strategic initiatives toachieve division goals.
• Maintain relationships with strategic technology vendors forthe division.

Project/Product Responsibility

• Has direct responsibility for the design, development, andapplication of technical solutions that satisfy customer needs andare essential to the ongoing operations of the division.
• Often primarily responsible for multiple major IT projects thatimpact the division.

Staff Management

• Develop and implement an effective and efficient organizationalstructure that, within the bounds of its responsibilities, supportsthe ongoing operations of the division.
• Recruit, develop, retain, organize, and manage the performanceof staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

In Addition to Duties & Responsibilities Above

Strategic Vendor & Portfolio Management

• Oversee SaaS portfolio strategy across 10+ core systems (Slate,Handshake, Salesforce CRMs, etc.).
• Manage contract renewals, license optimization, and vendorrelationships.
• Lead platform consolidation decisions and architecturalevaluations.

Enterprise Architecture & Integration

• Own solution architecture across systems supportingprospect-to-alumni lifecycle.
• Define integration standards and maintain multi-year technologyroadmap.
• Coordinate data flows with University Data Warehouse.

University Partnerships & Governance

• Serve as primary liaison with Central University InformationSystems.
• Negotiate service-level agreements for centrally absorbedtechnical services.
• Represent Carey on university governance forums.

Workday Implementation Leadership

• Lead Carey's technology involvement in university-wide Workdaymigration.
• Design integrations between Workday and Carey-specificsystems.
• Drive post-implementation optimization.

Security, Privacy & Compliance

• Ensure FERPA compliance and information security acrosssystems.
• Conduct vendor security assessments and coordinate breachresponse.
• Lead accessibility compliance and support AACSBaccreditation.

Service Management & Operations

• Define service catalog and customer experience standards.
• Manage incident/problem resolution and service qualitymetrics.
• Oversee hybrid delivery model with central IT.

Technology Investment & Planning

• Develop multi-year technology roadmap aligned to strategicpriorities.
• Build ROI models and prioritize technology investments.
• Partner on budget development.

AI Integration & Innovation

• Maintain awareness of AI capabilities in vendor platforms.
• Partner with automation function on AI deployment.
• Incorporate AI into IT workflows.

Team Leadership

• Build knowledge-sharing culture and eliminate single points offailure.
• Develop staff for portfolio-management operating model.
• Develop and support continuous learning culture.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree.
• Eight years of progressively responsible IT managementexperience including three years of management/supervisoryexperience.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience andadditional related experience may substitute for required educationbeyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extentpermitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

• Project management experience is desirable.
• Extensive technical expertise across a broad range ofsystems.

Anyvaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no costin our Occupational Health office.
